actions or behaviors.

Through this module, you will be able to gain insight on the importance
of developing the different aspect of an individual to achieve his/her personal
development.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

What makes a person whole? How do we measure the wholeness of an


individual? Is it possible to be a whole person? You could say that you are too
young to think about becoming a whole person, but let me remind you that you
are now a young adult and this is the right time to prepare your path in
becoming the best version of yourself.

Holistic Development

Holistic development - is a process of self-actualization and learning that


combines an individual's mental/cognitive, physical/physiological, social,
emotional/psychological, and spiritual growth. Development of these aspects
are vital for the person to achieve his/her success in life, and this has been the
primary goal of our country’s educational system.

5 Aspect of Holistic
2 Development

1. Physiological Development – development to any physical attributes


including the five physical senses, examples are painting, cutting of vegetables,
making a clay model, typing on a computer keyboard, medical surgery, driving,
writing, etc.

2. Cognitive Development - the intellectual functions of the mind: thinking,


recognizing, reasoning, analyzing, projecting, synthesizing, recalling, and
assessing. Some of the examples are analyzing reasons behind events and
situations, understanding the causes behind an event or situation, and
examining concepts, ideas, problems, and issues, etc.

3. Psychological Development – refers to the development of how thinking,


feeling, and behaving interact and happen in a person. It includes abilities to
understand others; what others are communicating; and building
relationships.

4. Social Development - how an individual interacts with other individuals or


groups of individuals. It involves enhancement in the abilities to interact and
communicate with others, working in a team, coordination, and cooperation
with others, etc.
5. Spiritual Development - the attribute of a person’s consciousness and
beliefs, including the values and virtues. The desired for pious and religious
enhancement.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1.1: Read the following situation, identify the aspect of holistic

How Do My Thoughts Impact My Life?

So many times, we are sitting on the back end of a decision wondering


how we got there. Sometimes it is a benign choice like eating that cheeseburger
when you swore you would eat better. To understand how our thoughts, affect
our lives we must first understand the interconnection between the various
aspects of ourselves. These aspects are compartmentalized into:
1. Thoughts - are comprised of information that our brain takes in and sends
to our mind. Our mind acts as the gatekeeper of the computed information. It
determines which information is relevant and thus what will become our
mental focus.

Let’s take the cheeseburger example. Maybe the thought was simply, “I
am hungry”, or maybe the thought is “I have had such a hard day, I deserve a
treat”

2. Feelings - are the emotional response to thoughts and behaviors. They are
indicators of our connection to a situation. They stem from our experiences
and our perspectives…aka thoughts. This is where things can get tricky, we
can take a simple thought “I am hungry” and add our own emotional response
to it, often we can combine emotions from other things happening that day
onto thoughts that have nothing to do with it. “I am hungry “can have the
stress of the day tacked on, or anger from a fight, or sadness from bad news.

3. Behaviors - are the actions generated from our thoughts and feelings. The
way we behave in response to something is because our thoughts persuade us
it is the best decision to make at that time. If you are hungry, feeling sad and
stressed, you may decide a cheeseburger is the best idea to cover both the
thought and the feeling.

As you can see, although the three categorical aspects are


distinguishable from each other they are highly interconnected. So, when we
are contemplating the impact of our thoughts, we can see that they strongly
affect the entirety of our lives. They provoke our emotions, as well as, our
behavioral responses. Our views and perceptions alter how we will feel and
thus how we will respond to a situation. Just as every journey is made of many
single steps each individual response makes up the life we build.
