OBJECTIVES:
a. Determines the solutions of polynomial equations.
b. Solves word problems involving polynomial
equations.
c. Shows patience and perseverance in solving
polynomial equations.
I. WHAT HAPPENED?
4
PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
1. x–5=0 ( -5, 5, 1, 0 )
2. x2 - 36 = 0 ( 1, 6, -6, 36)
3. x2 – 9 = 0 ( 2, 3, -3, 9 )
4. x2 + x - 2 = 0 ( 1, 2, -2, 3 )
5. x2 + x - 72 = 0 ( 8, -9, -72, 72 )
5
II. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW?
Suppose
2.
that the volume
(w+4) (w-4)
of the new
= _____________________
block is 150 cubic inches. Find the length
3. (d+2) (d2-2d+4) = _____________________
of an edge of the original cube?
6
DISCUSSION:
Equation : x + x2 = 72
x2 + x - 72 = 0
(x + 9) (x – 8) = 0
x+9=0 x–8=0
So, x = -9 x=8
Checking: x + x2 = 72
Using x = -9 : -9 + (-9)2 = 72
-9 + 81 = 72
72 = 72
Using x = 8 : 8 + (8)2 = 72
8 + 64 = 72
72 = 72
7
Solve number 2 using the steps in solving word
problems:
5 1 1 0 -150
5 30 150
1 6 30 0

SYNOPSIS
The author’s point of view is to let the
students solve word problems on polynomial
equations in the easiest way. First is to follow the
steps in solving word problems.
1. Read the problem
2. Know what is asked ANSWERS KEY
3. Know the given facts Pre-Activity:
1. x = 5
4. Determine the operation to be used 2. x = 6, x = -6
5. Translate the given word problem into 3. x = 3, x = -3
mathematical symbols 4. x = 1, x = -2
5. x = 8, x = -9
6. Use the operation to solve
7. Write the correct answer. What I have learned:
Knowledge of algebra is also very 1. 3.5 cm by 5.5 cm by 8 cm
2. w = 5 m and l= 12 m
important and applicable especially in finding
the zeros, factoring polynomials would be used. Evaluation/Post Test:
Knowing all of this, the students were 1. t = 1 sec
2. 13 ft
already equipped with knowledge in solving
3. l = 10 in. and h = 6 in.
