Guide Using ModScan32

This technical bulletin provides instructions for using Modscan32 software to access and modify data points from Autoflame combustion systems connected via Modbus. It outlines how to connect to the Mk7 D.T.I. via either TCP/IP or serial connection and configure the protocol settings. It describes the four types of Modbus addresses - coil status, input status, holding registers, and input registers - and how to read from and write to each type. Reference addresses in the technical manual are provided as examples for proving communications.

FROM: Autoflame Technical Sales Department

Subject: Guide to Using Modscan32

Overview: This technical bulletin has been produced to provide an overview of the
software Modscan32 and instructions on how to set it up.

Modscan may be used to access and modify data points contained in one or more MODBUS
slave devices connected to the PC via a serial port, Ethernet or network. When connecting the
Autoflame system for Modbus to a BMS or EMS (Building Management System or Energy
Management System), Modscan32 can be used to prove the comms are fully working from
the Autoflame system.

The Mk7 M.M. requires the Mk7 D.T.I. for Modbus communications; the Mini Mk7 M.M. can
use Modbus without the Mk7 D.T.I. (see technical bulletin 121).

1. Select ‘Read/Write’ on the Mk7 D.T.I. Setup screen and open the Modscan32 program on
your PC.

2. Connect to the DTI

Go to ‘Connect’, select ‘remote TCP/IP server’ for server or internet connection. In the IP
address box, type in the IP address of the Mk7 D.T.I. on that server.

On the protocol selections make sure the transmission mode is standard RTU and the Slave
response time out is 2000 msecs.

Figure 2. Protocol Selections

For direct connection, see Figure 3, i.e. Modbus RS422, select ‘Direct connection to COM1’
as appropriate and select the right comms speed for the Mk7 D.T.I. from table 1. These
settings are different to the Mk6 D.T.I. Please see table 1 below indicating the communication
differences between the Mk.6 and Mk.7 D.T.I. connections.

Baud Rate 9600 9600

Data Bits 8 8
Parity None None
Stop Bits 1 2
Comms ASCII/RTU RTU

3. Display Definition
Go to ‘Setup’ and click on ‘data definition’. You can use a scan rate 500 msecs, this means
that you are pulling data from D.T.I. every half second.

4. Address and length

Use the addresses in the technical manual to prove connections and communications. The
number of length read number of registers, for example if the length is 10 you will see the
reference addresses from 0101-0110.

Figure 5. Modbus Address

5. 4 Types of Modbus addresses

1) Coil status: read and write boiler on and off.
0 means on, 1 means off. You can turn boiler on and off by double click on the reference
address.

Figure 6. Write Coil

2) Input status: only read whether the boiler is on and off.

3) Holding register: you can change the set points by double click on the reference
address.
4) Input register: only read the set points.

Please note that the start of the address important for defining between read and read/write
addresses, see table 2.

Figure 7. Input Register

Figure 7 gives an example of what you will see in the input register option. The reference
address 30101 indicates the load index (firing rate) of boiler number 1, so it is at 100%
capacity. Address 30102 indicates the Start-up/firing status of boiler number 1. Address
30106 indicates the required value. Address 30109 indicate channel 1 potion of boiler
number 1, so it is at 77˚. Address 30110 indicate channel 2 potion of boiler number 1. If you
want more read more or other reference addresses, you can either change the address this
will take you straight to the input register you want or you can change the length and it will
allow you to read more input registers. All the details of each reference address are found in
Section 6 D.T.I. of the 2011 technical manual (note, they are the same as for the Mk6 D.T.I.,
however new addresses will be released for the new features like draft control).

6. Reference Addresses
Any reference address start with 0 and 4 you can read and write the values.
Any reference address start with 1 and 3 you can only read values.

0x Read/Write

Please contact Autoflame Sales Department for any further information or clarification on this matter. This document must be read in
conjunction with the Autoflame technical manual, and all changes must only be made by factory trained and certified technicians who have a
thorough appreciation and understanding of the Autoflame combustion systems and the combustion process in general. All local codes and
state regulations must also be adhered to.
