File Backup Using PCIN

This document provides instructions for transferring files between a computer and Crippa Benders using a PCU20 control unit and Siemens PC-IN software. The steps include connecting cables, configuring the PC-IN software RS232 settings to match the PCU20, and performing either a system backup from the PCU20 to the computer or file transfer between them using binary or text format.

Transferring Files

from/to Crippa
Benders with
PCU20

Materials Needed:
(1) Computer with Siemens
PC-IN software installed
(1) USB to Serial adaptor (if
PC does not have a Serial
Port)
(1) Null Modem Serial cable to connect to PCU20. Old PCs have a 9-pin male and newer PCs have a
25-pin female.

Install and open the Siemens PCIN software.

Connect your cables to the machine at this time.
In this software there are two transfer formats:
Binary and Text. Binary is used for backing up
machine parameters and archives. Text is used
for transferring part programs. In the upper right
corner of the screen you can choose Binary or
Text. PC-IN defaults to Binary so be sure to
choose the correct format for the type of data
being transferred.

First you must set your RS232 configuration so

that the laptop will communicate with the machine, Click the” RS232 button”. Now click either the “Binary
Format” or “Text Format” button in the upper right corner to modify the transfer settings for the type of
transfer you are using.

Comm Port: Choose the correct Comm Port for your USB-to-Serial adapter. Generally this is COM1. If you
do not know what it is go to Windows>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Ports. If your USB adapter
is plugged in it will be here. Double click on it and you should see the Comm Port number.

Baudrate: This must be the same as on the machine. Normally I use 9600, but some machines will work
with 19200.

Parity: None. This must be the same on the machine.

Data Bits: 8. This must be the same on the machine.

Stop Bits: 1. This must be the same on the machine.

Flow Control: Hardware (RTS/CTS). This must be the same on the machine.

Protocol Type: Normal Transfer.

Directories: Usually left blank, these can set the default directory that opens when you want to transfer a
file. It is more simple to choose these at the time of transfer.

Else: Click the boxes for both Activate Terminal and Stop with EOF. The timeout is fine at 30s.

When you are finished click the “Save and Activate” button on the right and then click “Back”.

System Backup
Press the “Menu Select” then “Startup” key. Press the Set Password button and enter the password
“EVENING” then press OK.

On the bender control press “Menu Select” then “Services”. Press the button for “Data Out” and then
“RS232 PG/PC” if it is not already highlighted. Now press the button “Set” to see the settings. Make sure
all of these settings are the same as in PCIN and click Save.

Press the hard button “>” that is below and right of the screen. This will show additional menu items on
the screen. You will now see “Series Startup” listed in the lower left part of the screen. Press the button
below Series Startup. Your screen should look similar to this:

If you do not have this option then look on the main file screen listing for “Startup Data”. Highlight that
and press the Input key to open it. Here you will see NCK and PLC options.

Press the button for NC (or PG/PC) which means that the data transmission will use the binary format.
Using the arrow keys highlight NC then press the Select button (in center of arrow keys) to place a check
mark in the box. Be sure only NC is selected.
On your pc click the button for Data In. Then choose a location and a file name. Generally I use the type
and date, for example “NC_7_1_16”. PCIN should now be waiting to receive data.

On the bender press the Start button and the transmission should begin. Watch carefully that the data
sent amount is the same as the data received on your computer. Be sure that the computer does not stop
receiving data before the bender stops sending. If this happens you need to candel both sides then in
Settings of PCIN choose Binary and deselect “Stop with EOF”. Restart the transfer. When the bender is
done sending you must press “Abort” in PCIN to finish receiving.

Once you have the NC file transferred deselect NC and select PLC. Repeat the transfer process.

After that you can do the same for MMC if this option exists.

The process is reversed for loading the archives onto a new NCU.

When done you may wish to return to the Startup page to Delete Password which returns the machine to
the standard access level for operators.

File Transfer
In the Services page of the HMI select Data In to receive a file or Data Out to send a file.

To Send:

then when you see that the transfer is complete press Abort

To Receive:
 Select Text Format in PCIN
 Click Receive Data then choose the destination and create a name for the file. This name does not
affect the part names used in the bender. Click OK
 On bender control
o Press Menu Select then Services
o On the right side of the screen choose RS232 C User
o Select Data Out at the bottom of the screen
o Choose the file or folder to send using the file explorer window
o Press the button Start and Start
 The transfer should complete automatically. If the RS232 Settings do not have “Stop at EOF” selected
then when you see that the transfer is complete press Abort

*If there are errors transferring files be sure that the RS232 Config in PCIN software matches the settings
in the bender. Be aware that these settings are different for binary and text transfers.
