Deriving Quadratic Functions From Graphs and Intercepts

This document provides steps for deriving quadratic functions from graphs, tables, and intercepts. It explains that to derive a function from a graph, you identify the vertex (h,k) and substitute it into the vertex form formula. You can then solve for the coefficient a by substituting another point from the graph. The same process is used to derive functions from tables. For intercepts, the formula is f(x)=a(x-r1)(x-r2) where r1 and r2 are the x-intercepts. It provides examples demonstrating how to derive functions from graphs with different vertices and from intercepts. Exercises are included for students to practice deriving functions from given information.

Deriving Quadratic Functions

from Tables, Graphs, and

Intercepts
Steps in Deriving Quadratic Function from Its Graph

❖ Identify the vertex (h, k) of the graph.

❖ Substitute the values of h and k in the vertex form

formula. 𝒚 = 𝒂(𝒙 − 𝒉)𝟐 +𝒌

❖ To solve for the value of a, select any other point (x, y)

on the graph. Substitute the values of x and y into the
resulting equation in step 2.

❖ Substitute the value of a in the result of step 2 to

derive the equivalent quadratic equation of the given
graph.

2
1. Identify the vertex. (1, 2)
2. Substitute it to 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 +𝑘
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 1)2 +2
3. Select any point (ordered pair) from the graph to
solve for the value of a..
And substitute into equation from in step 2.
(0, 3) 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 1)2 +2
3 = 𝑎(0 − 1)2 +2
3 = 𝑎(−1)2 +2
3 = 𝑎(1) + 2
3= 𝑎+2
3−2= 𝑎
𝑎=1
4. Substitute the value of a in the equation from step 2
to derive the equivalent quadratic equation of the
given graph..
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 1)2 +2 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 1 + 2
𝑦 = 1(𝑥 − 1)2 +2 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 3
𝑦 = (𝑥 − 1)2 +2

3
Vertex: (-1, -4) 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 +𝑘
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 + 1)2 − 4

(0, -2)
−𝟐 = 𝒂(𝟎 + 𝟏)𝟐 − 𝟒
−𝟐 = 𝒂(𝟏)𝟐 − 𝟒
−𝟐 = 𝒂 − 𝟒
−𝟐 + 𝟒 = 𝒂
𝒂=𝟐
𝒚 = 𝒂(𝒙 + 𝟏)𝟐 − 𝟒
𝒚 = 𝟐(𝒙 + 𝟏)𝟐 − 𝟒
𝒚 = 𝟐(𝒙𝟐 +𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏) − 𝟒
𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟐 − 𝟒
𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐

4
Vertex: (0, 3)
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ)2 +𝑘
𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 0)2 + 3
𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 3

(1, 2)
𝟐=𝒂 𝟏 𝟐+𝟑
𝟐 = 𝒂+𝟑
𝟐−𝟑=𝒂
𝒂 = −𝟏
𝒚 = 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑
𝒚 = −𝟏𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑
𝒚 = −𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑
5
Your Turn!

𝒚 = 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐

6
Your Turn!

𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟑

Derive Quadratic Function from intercepts
Example:
Find a quadratic function whose graph passes through the points (-1, 0) and
(1, 0) and whose vertex is the maximum point of the parabola.
Formula: 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 𝑟1 )(𝑥 − 𝑟2 ) −1,0 (1, 0)
𝑟1 , 0 (𝑟2 , 0)
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 + 1)(𝑥 − 1)
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 2 − 1)
𝑓 𝑥 = −(𝑥 2 − 1)
𝑓 𝑥 = −𝑥 2 + 1

8
Derive Quadratic Function from intercepts
Example 2:
Find a quadratic function whose graph passes through the points (-2, 0) and
(0, 0) and whose vertex is the minimum point of the parabola.
Formula: 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 𝑟1 )(𝑥 − 𝑟2 ) −2,0 (0, 0)
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 + 2)(𝑥)
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 2 + 2𝑥)
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥

9
Your Turn!
Find a quadratic function whose graph passes through the points (-2, 0) and
(2, 0) and whose vertex is the maximum point of the parabola.

Formula:
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 − 𝑟1 )(𝑥 − 𝑟2 ) −2,0 (2, 0)
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 + 2)(𝑥 − 2)
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑥 2 − 4)
𝑓 𝑥 = −(𝑥 2 − 4)
𝑓 𝑥 = −𝑥 2 + 4
