Welcome to English 8 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Analyzing Messages


Conveyed in a Text.

This learning module is designed to introduce varied activities anchored to the K to 12


Curriculum. The module emphasizes in developing the writing skills of the learners. It
illustrates knowledge and details in the step-by-step process in making an event proposal.
This module will be beneficial to the students and parents as it showcase interactive tasks for
the mastery of competency.
Furthermore, students may utilize separate sheets in answering the pre-test, self-check
exercises and post-test.

Welcome to the English 8 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Analyzing Messages
Conveyed in a Text.

The key goal for the learners is to have interactive module that will suit in your interest and
needs in learning. It contains well-chosen activities that tailored students’ reading and writing
skills. The module will start with a pre-test assessing prior knowledge to the lesson. Then, a
series of discussions and activities found within the parts of the module. Your responses are

What I Need to Know

This module is designed and written to help you, young learners learn better the English
language. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary levels of learners. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the learning competencies for
Grade 8 learners.

The Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) covered in this module is recognize
positive and negative messages conveyed in a text.
Objectives:
As a learner of this module, you are expected to:
1. recognize signal words and expressions used to convey positive and negative
messages;
2. classify statements whether positive or negative messages;
3. construct an essay and slogan using expressions conveying positive and negative
messages;
4. realize the importance of understanding the message conveyed in a given
situation.

expressions that convey positive and negative messages.

The different activities will help you analyze the messages conveyed in a text.
Let us start the activity by analyzing whether the paragraph conveys a positive or negative
message. On the space provided after each number, draw a happy face

if the paragraph conveys a positive message and a sad face if the paragraph
conveys a negative message.

commonly used negative words and expressions. Read carefully the given sample

• Can you find a line in the paragraph that conveys positive idea?
• How about a line that conveys negative idea?
• As a whole, what is the overall message of the text? Is it negative or positive?

Look closely into the statements. The line “I also appreciate the fact…,” conveys a
positive message. The word appreciate expresses gratitude.

What’s More

On the other hand, the expression cannot in the statement, “...good education which some
Filipinos cannot even afford,” conveys a negative message. The word cannot expresses
negation.
As a whole, the text conveys a positive message because it shows the importance of
studying and taking responsibility in one’s studies in order to become a responsible teenager.
You have just learned the use of the different expressions in conveying positive and negative
messages.

In this part of the module, you will be given tasks and sets of questions that help enrich

A haiku is a type of Japanese poem which consist of three lines. Every line follows a five (5),
seven (7), five (5) pattern.

computer laboratory. But, she really wanted to learn how to use this computer.
When she saw how thick the instruction book was, Tita felt slightly discouraged.
There would be so much to learn! Then she listened carefully to Miss Duran. She watched
every step shown to her. Tita studied the pictures in the book and asked a lot of
questions.
Finally, Tita figured out all the steps all by herself. She felt proud when the
computer responded to her voice. “Very good!” Miss Duran exclaimed with a smile.
“You’ve done it, Tita!”

Directions: Read the two situations below. Choose one and make a three-paragraph
composition expressing your realization on the importance of the chosen situation. Use
positive or negative words and expressions. (10pts)

1. In our barangay, there was only one COVID-19 positive case during the first month
of the pandemic. It became three in the second month and suddenly, it tripled or
became nine on the third month.

2. During pandemic, people stay at home. Families spend quality time and enjoy each
other’s company.
