An OS or Operating system, is the program that manages all of the other applications in a

computer, once installed into the computer. The OS supports a computer’s basic functions, such
as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals.

Functions of an Operating System:

An operating system provides three (3) essential capabilities:

1)    It offers a UI through a CLI or GUI;

2)    it launches and manages the application execution;

3)    and it identifies and exposes system hardware resources to those applications

1)    UI or User Interface

-      enables users to interact with the OS in order to set up, configure and even
troubleshoot the OS and its underlying hardware. There are 2 primary types of UI;
o   CLI or terminal mode window, provides a text-based interface where users rely on the
traditional keyboard or enter specific commands, parameters and arguments related to the tasks
(ex. Windows Key+r opens up run command)
