All questions are compulsory. This question paper consists of FOUR sections A,B,C and D.

SECTION – A [ 12 X 1 = 12 ]
1. A) chose the correct option or correct answer :
i) When air is replaced by a dielectric medium of dielectric constant K , the

B) Answer the following questions to the point with reason :


i) How does the speed of an electrically charged particle affects its mass ?
ii) Define the term electric dipole moment of a dipole .
iii) What is the electric flux through a cube of side 1 cm which encloses an electric
dipole of dipole moment 20 µCm .
iv) Why electric potential in the field of a negative charge is lower at near points and
higher at distant points ?
v) If temperature of a good conductor increases, how does the relaxation time of
electrons in the conductor change ?
vi) When is a Wheatstone bridge most sensitive ?
vii) Two heating coils, one of fine wire and the other of thick wire, made of same
material and of same length are connected in turn to a source of emf. Which
of the coils will produce more heat ?

SECTION – B [ 11 X 2 = 22 ]
2. Write the physical quantity that has its unit farad/metre. Is it vector or scalar quantity?

3. In a certain 0.1 m3 of space , electric potential is found to be 5 V throughout. What is


the electric field in this region?

4. n small metal drops of same size are charged to V volt each. If they coalesce to form a
single large drop , then find its potential.

5. How would you connect two capacitors across a battery, in series or in parallel , so that
they store greater i) total charge ii) total energy?

6. Plot a graph showing the variation of resistance of a conducting wire as a function of its
radius , keeping the length of the wire and its temperature as constant.

7. Two conducting wires X and Y of same diameter but different materials are joined in
series across a battery. If the number density of electrons in X is twice that of Y , find
the ratio of drift velocity of electrons in the two wires.

8. Two metal wires of identical dimensions are connected in series. If  1 and 2 are the
conductivities of the metal wires respectively, the effective conductivity of the
combination is how much ?

through an external circuit of 2Ω resistance. Find the best mode of grouping them and
the current through the external circuit.

13. Derive an expression of electric field due to an electric dipole at a point on its equator.

14. The point charges Q and – 2Q are placed some distance apart. If the electric field at
the location of Q is E, then electric field at the location of – 2Q is how much ?

15. Potential differences across terminals of a cell were 1.4V


measured in volt against different currents in
ampere flowing through the cell. A graph was drawn 1V
which was a straight line. Determine from the graph
i) Emf of the cell 0.8V
ii) maximum current obtained from the cell
iii) internal resistance of the cell 0.4V

16. Define mobility of electron. Write its relationship with relaxation time. Give its S.I unit.

17. Define temperature coefficient of resistance of a material. Name any one material
having a small value of temperature coefficient of resistance . Write one use of this
material.

18. Use Biot-Savart’s law to obtain an expression for the magnetic field at the centre of a
coil bent in the form of a square of side 2a carrying current I.

19. An electron moves with a velocity of 1000 m/s in a magnetic field of induction 0.3 T at
angle 300. If e/m of electron is 1.76 X 10 11 C/kg , find the radius of the path and pitch.

SECTION – D [ 5 X 5 = 25 ]

20. i) A parallel plate capacitor is charged to a potential difference V by a DC source.


The capacitor is then disconnected from the source . If the distance between the
plates is doubled , state with reason how the following will change :
A) electric field between the plate, B) capacitance and C) energy stored in the
capacitor. [3]

ii) A dipole is placed parallel to the electric field. If W is the work done in rotating
the dipole by 600, then find work done in rotating it by 1800 . [2]

21. i) Why does the electric field inside a dielectric decreases when it is placed in an
external electric field ? Explain by giving a diagram. [2]

ii) Two charges of +2.4µC and ─ 2.4µC are in a short dipole. Determine the magnitude
of electric field in the broad side on position at a distance of 0.3 m from the dipole. If
the dipole is rotated through 900, then what will be the intensity of the field at the
same point. [3]

22. i) In the circuit shown , the heat produced in 4Ω 6Ω


5Ω resistor, due to the current flowing A B
through it is 10 cal/s. Find the heat

ii) Prove that the current density of a metallic conductor is directly proportional
to the electric field produced in it. [2]

23. i) If 3A of current is flowing between points 2V 4Ω

ii) State the working principle of a potentiometer. Draw a labeled circuit diagram
of the experiment to find internal resistance of a cell. [ Derivation not needed ]

24. i) Write the condition under which an electron will move undeflected in the presence
of crossed electric and magnetic field. [1]

ii) A wire of length L is bent in to a semi-circular loop. Use Biot-Savart’s law to


deduce an expression for the magnetic field at the centre due to current I
passing through it. [2]

iii) Two equal electric currents are flowing perpendicular C A


to each other as shown . AB and CD are perpendicular I
to each other and symmetrically placed w.r.t the
currents. On which line AB or CD you can expect
