Module Title: Financial Analysis and Management

Module Lecturers: S. Palan/Makailla McConnell This module is designed for all business students, even those who have never had any formal financial training. It will provide an overview of the strategic managment of finances within an organisation and thus the focus is on finance and not accounting. This is a very broad area and includes the regulatory framework of account, analysis of financial statments, investment analysis and introduces international factors that affect financial management decisions. In business a basic understanding of finance is critical to business performance. Therefore, this module is designed to take you through financial principles including their application, providing a toolkit for managing financial responsibilities in a business. It focuses on the three main types of decision facing finance managers; investment decisions, financing decisions and dividend decisions and illustrates how they are interconnected with key principles of finance namely the time value of money, the risk-return trade-off, cash flows as a source of value, effect of interest rates and that market prices reflect information. The purpose of this module is to enable you to understand the financial decision-making process and to interpret the impact a financial decisions will have on value creation as without understanding, key decisions taken can have a negative impact on a business. You will be able to see the 'big picture', not just a set of unrelated topics. Assessment: The formal assessment of this module will be conducted through a closed book examination.
