12 BIZ STINGER MSC UP FOR 3 SECS AND UNDER

13 Last Tuesday, I have discussed about solving problems involving systems of

14 linear equation in two variables using the elimination method, wherein we

15 eliminate either the variable y or x, which in real life, most of the single people

16 did after their break-up, oopps sorry. Today, learn about solving problems

17 involving systems of linear equations in two variables by substitution method,

18 so I have prepared a learning activity sheets for your better comprehension on

2 send picture in our GC, I will check for it later on…Well done everyone! This

3 time, let’s proceed to our lesson entitled “SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING

4 SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES USING

5 SUBSTITUTION METHOD”.

6 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

7 The solution of a system of linear linear equations in two variables can be

8 determined graphically or algebraically. But today, we are going to focus on

9 solving it algebraically using the substitution method.

10 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER .

11 Example Number 1. Find the solution of the given system of linear equations

12 by substitution method. The equations are, 2x+y=5 and x-y=-2.

13 Using the substitution method, we have steps to solve the equation.

14 Step 1. Write equation 1 or equation 2 in the form y=mx+b.

15 So I prefer equation 1 to be written in the form y=mx+b so equation 1 that is

16 2x+y=5, becomes, y=-2x+5, and this will be equation 3.

17 Step 2. Substitute the resulting equation that is y= -2x+5 to equation 2.

18 So we have equation 2, x-y=-2, using the substitution method, we have x-(-

19 2x+5)=-2. By using the distributive property, we have x+2x-5=-2, then we

20 combine similar terms, and that is x+2x=-2+5, then we simplify, so the answer

21 is 3x=3 then we proceed to Step 3, which is finding the value of x by dividing

22 both sides of the equation by 3, so the answer will be x=1.

2 -MORE-
Applying multimedia…4

1 Strep 4. To find the value of y, substitute the value of x to equation 3, which is

2 y=-2x+5, so that is y= -2(1)+5 and the answer is y=3. Therefore, the solution

3 is (1,3).

4 Do you understand? Hope so.

5 BIZ STINGER MSC 3 SECS UP THEN FADE UNDER

6 We proceed with Example 2, and this time, we have a word problem.

7 Ben and Mae, hospital doctors, are both frontliners of the COVID-19

8 pandemic crisis. Every month, they receive letters from different people who

9 really appreciate their self-sacrificing spirit of love and dedication for their

10 work. Today, they count the number of mailed letters they got. Together,

11 they received 250 letters. Mae received 50 mailed letters more than that of

12 Ben. How many mailed letters did each one get? (2x)

13 To solve the problem, Step 1. Represent the unknown quantities and write the

14 system of linear equations.

15 Let x, be the number of mailed letters that Ben received.

16 Let y, be the number of mailed letters that Mae received.

17 The equations are: x+y=250, this is equation 1, that represent Mae and Ben’s

18 total received letters together, and the equation 2 is, y=x+50 which represent

19 that Mae received 50 mailed letters more than that of Ben.

20 Step 2. Write equation 2 in the form y=mx+b. If the given equation is already

21 in y=mx+b, proceed to the next step. So in this case, equation 2 is already in

22 y=mx+b form, so we proceed to Step 3 that is substitute the resulting equation

23 in step 2 to equation 1 that is x+y=250 becomes x+(x+50)=250.

2 -MORE-
Applying multimedia…5

1 Step 4. Solve for x by combining similar terms, we have,x+x=250-50, the

2 answer is 2x=200. Then divide both sides of the equation by 2 that is 2x

3 divided 2=200 divided by 2, so the answer is x=100.

4 Step 5. Solve for y by substituting the value of x to equation 2.

5 So y=x+50, becomes, y=100+50 and the value of y is 150.

6 Therefore, the solution is (100,150).

7 Ben received 100 letters while Mae received 150 letters.
