MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING AMIDST OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC:

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

“Education cannot wait,” says DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones. To maintain the
education of millions of Filipino students, the government implemented a distance learning
approach wherein there’s no face to face classes because of the danger that the virus brings.
Distance learning, also known as correspondence education or home study, is a form of
education where there is little or no face-to-face interaction between students and their
instructors. The Department of Education will be the one to provide and distribute the self-
learning modules to every student every week through their respective schools. They will
have ample time to study and assess the modules before the start of weekly class. Students
are expected to complete the task and submit their outputs at the end of the week. Open
communication between the teacher to students and/or teacher to parents/guardians is also
part of the norm. This is to ensure and monitor the progress of the students at home. Just the
thought of studying at home gives students the eerie feeling of freedom and luxury of being
less pressured. Conversely, this modular distance learning has certain adversities to both
parents and students.

What are the common disadvantages of Modular Distance Learning for a typical
Filipino student with a normal family set up?

Soon after the opening of classes, these problems and difficulties encountered by
students, especially teachers burst into different social media platforms.

Technical Element – this has been the most substantial issue of distance learning.
Technicality involves the availability of devices both for students and teachers. These are
Mobile phones. Computers, Laptops, Printers and Internet Connection.

Self-Learning Module’s Reliability – being the pivotal instrument of this new norm, it’s content
should meet the standard learning capacity of a student. Given that these instructional
materials will be assess by students on their own, mostly.

Sense of Authority– as mentioned, the luxury of being less pressured. Parents become
teachers, but do not see to be as one.

Focus and Concentration -the comfort of studying at home with less or no supervision at all.
Students tend to divert their attention instead of focusing on and prioritizing their
homeschooling first.

Parent’s / Guardian’s Educational Background- it may sound off but let’s face the reality that
not all parents are well equipped with proper education.

Undoubtedly, the shift of the teaching-learning delivery in schools to modular distance

learning made more challenging, on the part of the school personnel, the delivery of basic
quality education. That is why DepEd leaders are always finding avenues to solve the
problems and capacitating its teachers and school heads to become more effective in their
field for the modular distance learning.

As frontliners in the educational system, they have undergone various trainings and
seminars to be more equipped in delivering better education amid the COVID-19 pandemic as
it is a norm of the department to train teachers not just for professional growth but to become
ready for unexpected circumstances. Identified teaching personnel together with the
Education Program Supervisors prepared modules starting in May 2020 in all subjects for all
grade/year level across four quarters in accordance to the “Most Essential Learning
Competencies”. These self-learning modules are already considered learning packages
containing pre-test, discussion, and a series of evaluation/assessment. They are distributed to
all learners with the modular learning class schedule. The class will guide the learners on
what subjects and modules they have to study and learn for the particular week. Learners will
just focus on two subjects in a week with the intended number of modules per subject.
Textbooks and other learning materials in schools are also ready for dissemination as
additional learning references. However, issues on reading and writing instruction are among
the expected problems, particularly for the Kindergarten to Grade Three classes. Reading and
writing are necessary in these stages, and the modules cannot guarantee in building the
fundamental of the said skills. In this level, actual discussion is essential but because of the
restrictions imposed on face-to-face contact. process. Performance, as one of the criteria of
the grading system, will be assessed through the outputs and projects required in a quarter. It
is in this context that parents/guardians play a vital role for the fruitful outcome of this
endeavor. Their guidance and support inspire the kids to work hard and be motivated to
study. Under the new normal, school personnel, parents, and stakeholders must work jointly
with each other for the learners to acquire the best quality education that they deserve.

Modular instruction is more operative in teaching learning method as equated to usual

teaching approaches because in this modular approach the students learn at their own stride.
It is unrestricted self-learning panache in which instantaneous reinforcement, comment is
provided to practice exercise, which stimulate the students and build curiosity in them.

of teaching so the teachers should be provided adequate training about how to strategize and
implement a module in classroom setting.
