Building Technology II (Lecture 2)

This document discusses different types of reinforced concrete slabs, including one-way slabs, two-way slabs, flat slabs, solid slabs, and mushroom slabs. It provides definitions and comparisons of one-way and two-way slabs. Flat slabs are described as having no supporting beams, while mushroom slabs include column caps and drop panels. Homework assignments are presented involving drawing plans and sections of mushroom slabs.

One-Way Slab
One -way slab is supported on two
opposite side only thus structural
action is only at one direction.
If a slab is supported on all the four sides
but the ratio of longer span (l) to
shorten span (b) is greater than 2, then
the slab will be considered as one -way
slab.

Associate Professor
Dr. Abdel-Aziz Farouk, 2020-2021
Two-Way Slab
Two-way slabs are the slabs that are
supported on four sides and the ratio of
longer span (l) to shorter span (b) is
less than 2. In two -way slabs, load
will be carried in both the directions.
So, main reinforcement is provided in
both direction for two-way slabs.

Difference Between One Way Slab and Two Way Slab

There are some basic differences between one way slabs and two way
slabs. To clear the concept of one way and two way slabs a table is
shown below.

One Way Slab Two Way Slab

One way slab is supported by beams Two way slab is supported by beams
in only 2 sides. in all four sides.
The ratio of longer span panel (L) to The ratio of longer span panel (L) to
shorter span panel (B) is equal or shorter span panel (B) is less than 2.
greater than 2. Thus, L/B >= 2 Thus, L/B < 2.
Main reinforcement is provided in Main reinforcement is provided in
only one direction for one way slabs. both the direction for two way slabs.

Two-way Flat Plate (Solid):
- A flat plate floor is a two-way
slab with no supporting beams,
only columns.

-Advantages :
- Low cost formwork and
Exposed flat ceilings Fast.

-Disadvantages :
- Low shear capacity and Low
Stiffness (notable deflection)

- Flat Plate suitable span 6.00 m

Two-way Flat Slab:
- A two-way slab with column
capitals or drop panels, or both.

-Advantages :
- Low cost formwork and Exposed
flat ceilings Fast

-Disadvantages:
- need more formwork for capital
and panels
- maximum 10 floors

- suitable span 8.00 m with L.L.=
