Functions of Behavior Parent Training Handout PDF

The function of a behavior is the reason it is performed, such as to provide sensory regulation, calmness, escape something aversive, gain attention, or access preferred items. Behaviors can serve different functions like sensory, escape/avoidance, attention, or access to tangibles. To determine a behavior's function, consider the antecedent, the behavior itself, and the consequence, which can help teach socially appropriate replacement behaviors that meet a child's needs.
