DC Motor Sample Problem

The document contains examples of calculating values for different types of DC motors: 1) A shunt wound DC motor example calculates the current in the armature and back emf given total current, field and armature resistances, and supply voltage. 2) A series wound DC motor example calculates motor speed given number of conductors, flux, poles, supply voltage, armature and field resistances and current. 3) A short shunt compound DC motor example calculates armature current and back emf given supply voltage, total current, armature, series field and shunt field resistances. 4) A long shunt compound DC motor example similarly calculates back emf given supply voltage, total current,

Shunt wound DC Motor.

Sample Problem.

 A 250V Shunt Motor takes a total current of 20A. Resistance of the shunt field is 200ohm &
armature resistance of 0.3ohm. Find the current in the armature and the back emf.
Given:
IL = 20A Ish = V/Rsh Eb = V- IaRa
V = 250V
= 250/200 = 250 – 18.75(0.3)
Rsh = 200ohm
Ra = 0.3ohm Eb = 244. 375 V
Ish= 1.25 A
Eb = ?
Ia = ?
IL = Ia + Ish

20 = Ia + 1.25

Ia = 18.75 A

Series wound DC Motor.

Sample Problem.

 A 4-Pole, 250V series motor has a wave connected armature with 1254 conductors. The flux per
pole is 22mWb when the motor is taking 50A/ Armature resistance is 0.2ohm and series field
resistance is 0.2ohm. Claculate the speed.
Given:
Eb = øZNP
60A
P=4
Eb =V-Ia (Ra+Rse)
V=250V
A=2
Eb = 250-50(0.2+0.2)
Z=1254 conductors
Ø=22mWb
Eb =230V
Ia= 50A
Ra= 0.2ohm
Rse= 0.2ohm
N=?
Eb = Ø Z N P
60 A -3
230=22x10 (1254)(N)(4)
60(2)
N=250.11rpm
Short Shunt Compound DC Motor.

Sample Problem.

 A short shunt compound motor 220V, 10A current from supply has an armature resistance of
0.2ohm, series field resistance of 0.5ohm and shunt field resistance of 220ohm respectively.
Calculate the armature current and back emf.

Given:

V=220V IL = Ise V=Eb + IseRse+IaRa+Vbrush

Ra=0.2ohm 220=Eb + 10(0.5)+9.02(0.2)

Ish=V- ILRse
Rse=0.5ohm Rsh
Eb=213.2V
= 220-10(0.5)
Rsh=220ohm 220
Ish =0.98A
Eb=?

Ia =? IL =Ia+Ish

10=Ia+0.98

Ia=9.02A

Long Shunt Compound DC Motor.

Sample Problem.

 A long shunt 600V, 1200rpm DC motor has a series field winding resistance of 0.05ohm, a shunt
field winding of 200ohm & an armature resistance of 0.1ohm. The machine draws a 100A from
the supply calculate the back emf.
Given:
V=600V Ish=V/Rsh
V=Eb+IaRa+IseRse
Rse=0.05ohm Ish=600/200
Rsh=200ohm =3A 600= Eb+97(0.1)+97(0.05)
Ra=0.1ohm
IL= 100A Eb=585.45V
Eb=? I L =Ia+Ish

100=Ia+3A

Ia=97A
