∙ Modular learning is a form of distance learning that uses Self-Learning Modules (SLM)
based on the most essential learning competencies (MELCS) provided by DepEd. The
modules include sections on motivation and assessment that serve as a complete
guide of both teachers’ and students’ desired competencies. Teachers will monitor the
learners’ progress through home visits (following social distancing protocols) and
feedback mechanisms, and guide those who need special attention.

LOOKING BACK TO YOUR LESSON

A belief can be defined as a feeling that something exists or true. A conviction can
be defined as a firm belief.
Directions: Read the following statements and write your answers in complete
sentences.
1. Give a statement about values that you agree with. Explain your answer.

2
2. How can you help others in your own capacity? Explain your answer.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
General statement is the topic sentence or the main idea of the paragraph.
Supporting sentences are specific set of information for the topic sentence. Text
evidence is the information in the passage, a selection or text that helps in supporting
the answer. It uses specific examples from a given text such as quotations that support
claims and ideas.
Text evidence is important because it gives words validity and strength, proving
that you did, in fact, read and understand that text for yourself. In addition, without
text evidence, the claims or answers are empty and invalid because there are no back
up support.
As readers and writers, it is natural to develop ideas, ask questions, and make
claims regarding what we are reading. Citing textual evidence requires us to look back
into the text for evidence to support an idea, answer a question or make a claim. It
also requires us to think more deeply about the text, analyze the author, source, etc.
Examples:
∙ Little Bobby loves to go to church every Sunday. Like his parents, he prepares at 6:00 in
the morning so he can attend the 8:00 mass.
What evidence do we have that Bobby loves to go to church?
The underlined sentence is the evidence that Little Bobby loves to go to church.
∙ The Climate Change Commission (CCC) is seeking increased public-private cooperation
on strengthening environmental and climate change awareness and education
nationwide. Secretary Emmanuel de Guzman, CCC vice chairperson and executive
director, said such cooperation is necessary to better help the country pursue
sustainable development and build resilience to threats like climate change and the
coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

When Adversity Knocks
by Shannon Serpette
Asha was getting frustrated and tired of life, so she asked her father what to do.
Her father told her to bring an egg, two tea leaves, and a potato. He then brought out
three vessels, filled them with water and placed them on the stove.
Once the water was boiling, he told Asha to place the items into each pot and keep
an eye on them. After 10 minutes, he asked Asha to peel the egg, peel the potato, and
strain the leaves. Asha was left confused.
Her father explained, “Each item was placed into the same circumstance, boiling
water. See how each responded differently?”
He continued, “The egg was soft, but is now hard. The potato was hard but is now
soft. And the tea leaves, they changed the water itself.”
The father then asked, “When adversity calls, we respond in the same manner as they
have. Now, are you an egg, a potato, or tea leaves?”

CHECKING YOUR
UNDERSTANDING
Activity 3 – Directions: Read the following passages. Draw a conclusion or make an
opinion by citing the supporting statement. Write your answer on a separate sheet of
paper.

4
A. A survey was conducted to find out what students would want for a teacher. It showed
that most students want a friendly teacher rather than a strict one. The reason
behind this, “friendly teacher” makes learning easier. The warmer the heart of a
teacher, the more it can help and share his knowledge to others. The more
approachable he is the easier the student can connect with him making it less
difficult to point out students’ weaknesses and help them turn these into strengths.
B. Most of us, regardless of age, buy gifts for loved ones and friends during special
occasions. This practice of gift-giving may be traced from Biblical times. However,
some tend to give expensive gifts in return of future favors. The need to share with
those who are in need is becoming a lesser priority. Gifts should be given freely with
love and respect.
