CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

This is to report on the four months SIWES program which contains in it a well

detailed and brief explanation of the work done by the student during the six

months industrial training program, a brief background of SIWES, brief

information about the establishment where I carried out my industrial training

SIWES program. The experiences gained and some challenges encountered during

the training and other findings are listed out.

The program was designed to expose, or equip students in universities,

polytechnics and college of education with practical experience of things learnt

theoretically in their different areas of study. It also enables them to acquire more

knowledge for self-reliance having been exposed to real field of their various

disciplines. It is also a media and opportunity which students familiarize and

expose themselves to the needed experience in handling equipment and

machineries that are usually not available in their institutions.

Finally, this program (SIWES)is the skill development program which

enables the theoretical aspects of teaching to be practicalized thereby expose the

students as well as preparing them to practicalize, touch, see, feel, operate, and

1
experience many things which appear to be strange to their course of study which

definitely they are going to be engaged after their graduation.

BRIEF HISTORY OF SIWES

The Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), was established by

Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in the year 1973 to acquaint the Students with the

skill of handling Industrial machines and equipment. The scheme exposed students

to industry - based skills necessary for smooth transition from the classroom to the

field of work. SIWES prepared and exposed Students of Universities,

Polytechnics, Colleges of education and other institutions for the Industrial work

situation they are likely to meet after school. The Scheme affords Students the

opportunity of familiarizing and exposing themselves to handling of machines and

equipment’s that are usually available in their institutions.

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) funded the scheme during the formative years.

However, the board (ITF) due to financial problems couldn't fund further,

withdrew from the Scheme in 1978. The Federal government having noted the

situation and seeing the importance of the industrial training handed over the

Scheme to the National Universities Commission (NUC) and to the National Board

for Technical Education (NBTE) in 1979. Then in November 1984, the

2
implementation and management of the Scheme was reverted again to ITF with the

funding to be borne by the Federal Government.

Involvement in this SIWES has become a great condition for the award of diploma

and degree certificates in a specified area in most institutions. These (SIWES) is a

key factor inquired to inject and engender industrlization and economic

development in our nation through the induction of scientific and technological

skill of students.

OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

1. It prepares students for the industrial work situation they are to meet after

graduation.

2. Enlist and strengthen employer’s involvement in the entire educational

process and prepare students for employment in industry and commerce.

3. Provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work

situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practical.

4. It has been designed to expose student to the world of work starting from the

industrial skills and techniques employed. This is the establishment that will

come out with lot knowledge and experience.

5. To make the transition from school told the field of work easier and

enhance Students contacts for later job placement in the future.

3

CHAPTER THREE
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MANAGEMENT STAFF
There was cordial relationship between me, the management and the staff of
J.U.O Resources Nigeria Limited which is located at Kings Plaza Umunze.
The organization keeps no necessary information away from me, due to the
love and treatment I was able to ask question whenever am confused, therefore, I
15
acquired all the necessary skills, I was guided and supervised strictly and
appropriately.
The management enjoyed my stay with them throughout the period of
attachment, there was no problem the management has against me. I was highly
impressed by the attitude of the staff and management towards me.

CHAPTER FOUR
FINDINGS AND SUGGESTION
FINDINGS
From the experience I had in the IT program I found out that the
duration/time of the industrial training (IT) program is too short and despite the
effort of the management and the staff, I was not able to cover the areas as
supposed during the period of the Industrial Training.
I also find out that the student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES)
is a skill acquisition program designed to prepare and expose student to know how
their various area of specialization is applicable to their life.
SUGGESTIONS
I suggest that the duration of the industrial training program should be
extended so that students will acquire the necessary experience needed in the
program. Also looking at the financial problem students undergo during the
industrial training exercise, I suggest that students should be paid some allowances
before resumption of the training to enhance smooth running of the program.
I also suggest that the school management should mandate the students to
carry out their industrial training in their area of specialization.

16
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
SUMMARY
Student industrial work experience (SIWES) has been an avenue for bridging the
gap between theoretical knowledge acquired for higher institution and the practical
application of such knowledge. It is designed to meet the students problem as well
provide room for activities such as employment of school, industrial training helps
students to practice what they have learnt theoretically. It also brightens the social
life of the students by giving them the opportunity to interact with other students
from different institution.
CONCLUSION
I remain grateful to God almighty who see me through during my industrial
training, the ITF and government for making a provision for IT program for the
students. I would encourage them to keep the flag flying, for the sake of better
future of Nigerians. I also insist that the school should as much as possible ensure
that industrial training program is not neglected because students derives great
benefit from it.
Government or schools should ensure a proper supervision of SIWES student so
that the purpose of the program will be achieved.
