Assignment 1 and 2 With Solution

This document contains questions about optical communication concepts including: 1) Calculating signal attenuation and power levels given power measurements between two points or a known attenuation. 2) Determining the output power level of an optical signal transmitted through a fiber with a given total attenuation and launched power. 3) Calculating the number of modes in a graded-index fiber with a parabolic profile at different wavelengths. 4) Calculating the numerical apertures of step-index and graded-index plastic and glass optical fibers given the core and cladding refractive indices.

Assignment I (Optical Communication)

1. A signal travels from point A to point B. (a) If the signal power is 1.0 mW at point A and
0.125 mW at point B, what is the attenuation in dB? (b) What is the signal power at point B if the
attenuation is 15 dB?
2. A 50-km long optical fiber has a total attenuation of 24 dB. If 500 mW of optical power
get launched into the fiber, what is the output optical power level in dBm and in mW?
3. Calculate the number of modes at 820 nm and 1.3 mm in a graded-index fiber having a
parabolic-index profile (a = 2), a 25-mm core radius, n1 = 1.48, and n2 = 1.46. How does this
compare to a step-index fiber?
4. Calculate the numerical apertures of (a) a plastic step-index fiber having a core refractive
index of n1 = 1.60 and a cladding index of n2 = 1.49, (b) a step-index fiber having a silica core
(n1 = 1.458) and a silicone resin cladding (n2= 1.405).
5. Explain optical fiber communication system with block diagram.
6. Differentiate single mode step index and graded index fiber with diagram.
7. Explain why we prefer single mode for long distance communication and multi mode for
short distance communication.
8. Consider a fiber with diameter 8 μm, n1 = 1.45 and Δ=0.92% . if fiber is operated at
1550nm then how many modes will it have.

1. What is pulse broadening and differentiate between intermodal and intra modal
dispersion and also explain two causes of intramodal dispersion in detail.
2. What do you mean by material absorption and explain its types.
3. Compare the characteristics of plastic and glass fiber according to their applications.
4. Explain the cause of attenuation using bending losses.
5. Why does splicing of fiber cause optical loss?
6. Explain any two basic structures of index guided photonic crystal fiber.
7. Calculate the waveguide dispersion at 1320 nm in units of [ps/(nm.km)] for a single-
mode fiber with core and cladding diameters of 9 mm and 125 mm, respectively. Let the
core index n1 = 1.48 and let the index difference D = 0.22 percent.
