LP Distance Formula

This document contains a daily lesson plan for a mathematics class teaching about plane coordinate geometry and horizontal and vertical distance. The objectives are for students to define distance, find the horizontal and vertical distance between points on a coordinate plane using the distance formula, and apply this to solve real-world problems. The lesson will include reviewing concepts, worked examples of using the distance formula to find distances between points, practice problems, and a reflection on student understanding.

I. OBJECTIVES
Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of circles and coordinate geometry.
A. Content Standard
B. Performance Standard is able to formulate and solve problems involving geometric figures on the rectangular
coordinate plane with perseverance and accuracy.
C. Learning Competency applies the distance formula to prove some geometric properties.

D. Specific Objectives At the end of the lesson, at least 75% of the learners are expected to:
(Cognitive, Affective, 1. define distance
2. Find the horizontal and vertical distance between a pair of points on the coordinate plane
Psychomotor)
3. Appreciate how the distance formula facilitates finding solutions to real-life problems.
II. CONTENT

IV. PROCEDURES
As Quick As You Can!
Give the difference in each pair of integers.

new lesson
Look at this figure. Which line is longer?
(Grab ruler and measure both lines. Unless we have a really weird ruler, we find they are the exact same
length. But even after we know for certain they are equal, we still “see” the top line as longer. Why?
Because our brains process and capture visual clues rapidly and unconsciously.)
ENGAGE
B. Establishing a purpose
of the lesson
C. Presenting examples or
instances of the new
lesson
Discuss the following:
1. Ways in finding the horizontal and vertical distance between two points.
The distance between two points is always nonnegative.
The horizontal distance between two points is the absolute value of the difference
of their x- coordinates. Likewise, the vertical distance between two points is the
EXPLORE absolute value of the difference of their y-coordinates.
D. Discussing new concepts
and practicing new skills
Find the distance between two points
#1
E. Discussing new concepts
and practicing new skills #2

Find the distance between two points. The first one is done for you.
1. Find the distance between A (-2,3) and B(5,3).
EXPLAIN Since A and B are aligned horizontally,
F. Developing Mastery then AB =|5-(-2) | = |5+2| = |7| = 7 units
2. Find the distance between C (-5,2) and D (-5, -3). (2 points)
3. Find the distance between E (-1, -4) and F (4,-4). (2 points)
