learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.
Posttest - This measure how much you have learned from the
entire module.
EXPECTATIONS
This module is designed and written to explain what happens when volcanoes
erupt. It has prepared to provide activities for reinforcement, strengthening, and
enriching knowledge and skills. The skills in this module cover all the most essential
learning competencies in the list issued by the Department of Education.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. define sea and land breeze;
2. describe the effect of the difference in temperature and pressure on the
movement of air; and
3. recognize the importance of the local winds in real-life situations.

C. Land cools down faster because it absorbs more heat than water.
D. Water cools down faster because it absorbs more heat than land.
3. How does land breeze occur?
A. It occurs when warm air over the land rises and the wind from the
sea blows toward the land.
B. It happens when the cool wind from the land rushes to the sea to
replace the rising warm air over the sea.
C. Warmer air from the sea moves toward the land to replace the rising
cold air over the land.
D. Cold air from the sea sinks and moves toward the land.
4. Which of the following corresponds to the movement of the air from the sea
to the land during the daytime?
A. Wind C. Sea breeze

5. Which warms up faster, land or water?
I. Land warms up faster than water.
II. The water warms up faster than land.
III. Both land and water warm-up at the same time.
IV. The rate of warming varies, depending on the weather
conditions.
RECAP
In your previous lesson, you have learned about convection in the air. Can
you still remember your lesson about it? Let us have some practice exercises to
refresh your mind. Answer the following questions.
LESSON
What is a Breeze?
The light and the cool wind we experience during summertime is called a
breeze. It is one of the pleasant things we should experience during summer on the
beach. There are two types of breezes: sea breeze and land breeze. Land breeze and
sea breeze takes place near large bodies of water. The key difference between the two
is caused by the property of water to retain and warm up longer. The differences in
the temperature of land and water cause respective changes to the densities of the
air above them. The resulting low pressures then cause alternating air movements
which are manifested as breezes. Individuals situated near coastlines (within 50
kilometers from the oceanfront) experience cool sea breezes during the day and warm
land breezes at night. Furthermore, these winds are instrumental in humidity and
temperature levels, and precipitation rates.
The main difference between both types of breeze is that water retains the heat
for a long period. The temperature difference between land and water causes a
respective change in the densities of the air above their surfaces. The alternating air
movement is caused by the resulting low pressure, which causes the breeze. People
living in the coastal areas experience a cool sea breeze during the daytime and a
warm land breeze during the night. These breezes also play a crucial in the
temperature and humidity level and precipitation rates.
Sea Breeze
The sea breeze is known as the movement of winds from a larger body
of water like the oceans and seas. It is also called the onshore winds. This
usually occurs during the summer and spring season as there is more
temperature difference between the land and the adjacent bodies of water like
the ocean and sea. This is most often observed in the afternoons when the
nearby land has been heated at its maximum level. Notably, sea breezes are
stronger during the summer months as compared to the winter season.
This is again attributed to the huge temperature difference between
land and sea which may even prompt thunderstorms which are essential in
bringing rain. Hence, sea breezes are not that apparent during the autumn
and winter months because the temperature differentials are smaller.
During the daytime, the land gets quickly heated by the sun. The air above
the water gets less warm as compared to the air above the land. Due to the warmer
air above the land, it begins to rise in the air due to being less dense. Then, low
pressure is formed. As the warm land air moves up, the denser air above the water
moves to take space above the land. This cooler air is known as the sea breeze.
Land Breeze
The flow of the moving air from land to water is known as the land breeze; it
is also known as the offshore wind. When the temperature of the land is lower
compared to the adjacent water bodies, it happens during the night and early
morning. It arises at night and early morning when the land has a lower heat capacity
as compared to the adjacent water. Particularly, land breezes last longer during the
last weeks of summer as this is when the sea temperature will gradually increase to
the land’s daily temperature variations.
Water has a higher specific heat capacity than other materials like land. The
specific heat capacity of water is 4,200 Joules per kilogram per degree Celsius
(J/kg°C). This means that it takes 4,200 J to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water
by 1°C.
The next activities will give you a first-hand idea about the effect of the
difference in temperature and pressure on the movement of air.
ACTIVITIES
Direction: A. Write T if the statement is true. If false, change the underlined word
or phrase to make it correct.
___________________1. During the day, both land and sea are heated by the sun.
___________________3. The moving air or wind from the sea is called a sea breeze.
___________________4. During nighttime, the land and sea both cool down.
___________________5. The land cools down faster than the sea during nighttime.
___________________6. The moving air or wind from the land is called land breeze.
___________________7. Land breeze and sea breezes take place near large bodies of
water.

WRAP-UP
Conversely, a land breeze occurs during the _____________ when the air over
the ocean is warmer than the air over the land. This warm ocean air is less dense
than the cooler air over the land. Therefore, the warm air rises, and the cooler air
from over the land rushes in to take place. If you were on a boat during the night
hours, you would feel the breeze coming from the shore.
