The city of Songdo in South Korea is a very smart city. Songdo was designed to be a
city of the future. It is very high-tech. For example, there are sensors in the city that
monitor temperature, energy use, and traffic. These sensors try to inform city workers
of any problems and also try to help residents who are moving around the city.
Apartment buildings have everything residents need, such as stores, hair salons, and
restaurants. The apartment buildings are also convenient. Residents can control their
utilities—lights and heat—from a control panel in their apartment or even from their
smartphone. There are also many parks where people can meet and relax. But,
residents say, there is something missing: people.
The city was originally planned for 300,000 people, but the current population is only a
third of that, about 100,000. While some areas of the city are busy, like the business
district, other neighborhoods are almost completely empty. Songdo does have an active
virtual community, however. Residents are very involved in online discussion boards
and social media groups. Maybe in this high-tech city, it makes sense that you can find
your community online.
Developers and city planners say that they aren't worried about the city's slow growth.
They believe that businesses will want to move there because one thing that makes
Songdo unique is that it is a city built around an airport. As a matter of fact, it is
considered one of the world's best international airports. Developers and city planners
also say the project isn't finished yet and that people will eventually leave their
polluted and noisy cities in favor of the comfort and convenience of the world's
smartest city.

In the last 10-20 years, the city I know well, Bangalore, has seen significant changes in its
infrastructure and population. With the advent of IT companies, the city has undergone a rapid
transformation from a quiet, laid-back city to a bustling metropolis. The city's skyline is now
dominated by high-rise buildings, and the population has increased manifold. The city's
transportation system has improved, with the introduction of a metro rail network and more
efficient buses. However, this growth has also brought with it traffic congestion, pollution, and
a strain on the city's resources. Despite these challenges, Bangalore continues to attract people
from all over the world, drawn by the city's vibrant culture, job opportunities, and warm
climate.
