Scenario
You have been shortlisted as a candidate to participate in a new TV programme.in which contestants are
pitched against each other to gain the favours of a John Smith.
John Smith is a billionaire businessman with ventures in fields ranging from banking, property
management as well as retail.
At the end of the programme, only one contestant will be offered a job in one of the new
ventures.
Instructions
All candidates have been asked to prepare a presentation explaining the link between
Strategic Planning and Operations Management. In
particular, you should:
1. Explain how Operation Management fit within Strategic Management and why Operation
Management is so important
2. Consider the value of the Three E’s to an organisation
3. Assess the impact of the tension between cost minimisation and quality maximisation by
providing examples
4. Assess how quality management techniques are applied to improve operations in
organisations
5. Evaluate the significance of the five performance objectives of operations management
Instructions
You have got through to the final round and have been offered a position working alongside John
Smith and the Senior Management Team.
You have been asked to prepare a presentation in which you:
1. Select an organisation and analyse its operational functions
2. Evaluate the operations management process and either propose to purchase the existing
company to improve it or launch as a new competitor.
3. As a final conclusion you should then propose new operational outcomes as well as produce
a network plan indicating critical path(s).
Instructions
You have been asked by a popular business magazine to write an article about what went well and
what could have been done better regarding your proposed operational outcomes and your proposed
network plan & critical path(s).
The article should reinforce the need for operational planning and how it adds values.
2

You should use and cite a range of academic and reliable sources.
A comprehensive Harvard style reference list must be included at the end of the work.

Task 3 of 3 Reflection
An operational plan is essential. It serves as an all-star playbook for Samsung and other companies too. OM
highlights how quality management can be used to assess the performance of important employees and how
Samsung’s team may collaborate to achieve the goal. Planning for production entails deciding what to produce,
when to produce, how much to produce, and other factors. To properly optimize Samsung’s production flow, a
long-term perspective on production planning is required. To maximize Samsung’s production system’s
performance and meet throughput goals, production control employs a variety of control strategies.
The goal of operation planning and control is to make that the daily production of Samsung runs smoothly.
Setting goals allows Samsung to know what will be accomplished by their plans and when assigning duties and
responsibilities, as well as who will be involved with the new product and services and how they will be
involved. This is why Samsung needs an operational plan and control. Scheduling, which includes routines,
process scheduling, supply & demand planning, resource requirements assessment, and monitoring and
performance evaluation. The control element of the process includes control activities, metrics, and control
techniques in Samsung.
3.1 WHAT WENT WELL AND WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BETTER REGARDING
SAMSUNG’S PROPOSED OPERATIONAL OUTCOMES
Samsung wasted money and lacked time management by taking too long to evaluate the AI system. The
employees were not given enough time to prepare for and discuss the provided scenarios. Samsung therefore,
conduct fewer tests on the AI system and provide its employees more time and planning options so they can
complete the specified scenarios on schedule.
While the organization kept a meeting with all its employees, an employee came up claiming “Samsung’s
production cost is excessive hence, make it half cost”. Sale & marketing agreed as we expanded the channels
for collaboration and communication because a reduction in production cost will result in increased quantity
and higher sales, consequently, a sufficient profit.
Due to technical pressure brought on by the employee’s lack of knowledge, it took longer to make plan, and
design the products. And the outcome won’t be as expected for Samsung. Thus, HRM must hold tests or
practical’s before hiring personal, or provide extra training to those employees who don’t have enough
familiarity with Samsung operations.

A project planning techniques called critical path analysis concentrates on identifying tasks that depend on one
another to be completed on time. Setting a seasonable timeline for a complicated project requires an
understanding of the connection between tasks. (Investopedia)
Following the rule that a legal path must always move in the direction of the arrows, Samsung can enumerate
11 unique paths from start to finish, with associate times ranging from a minimum of 19 days (A-C-F-G-I-J-K)
to maximum of 36 days (A-B-D-E-G-H-J-K). The critical path determines the over-all project and tell which
job are critical in Samsung’s effect on this time. If Samsung wishes to complete the project in less than 36 days,
it would be useless to shorten job not on the critical path. For example, if activity H delays progress, then
activity (J-K) must wait until its completed. The critical path and network plan is useful for Samsung at various
stages for its project, from initial to planning or analyzing of alternative programs, to scheduling to controlling
the activities that comprise Samsung’s project.
