EIGRP Notes

There are four key terms in the Dual algorithm: feasible distance, reported distance, successor, and feasible successor. EIGRP uses five different message types: Hello, Update, Query, Reply, and Acknowledgment. Hello packets are used to establish and maintain neighbor relationships. Update packets share routing table information between neighbors. Query packets are sent when the successor route fails and no backup exists, and Reply packets respond with an alternate route. Acknowledgment packets confirm receipt of routing table packets.

There are four terms of Dual algorithm

• FD ( Feasible Distance )
• RP ( Reported Distance ) or ( Advertised Distance )
• Successor (best path )
• Feasible Successor ( backup path )

FD = Total metric from source to destination.

RD = Total metric from Neighbor to destination.

Successor =

1. The best path to the destination is called the successor.

The successor will be copied from the topology table to the routing table.

2. Successor are stored in topology table as well as in the routing table.

Feasible successor =

It is a backup path of successor which is stored in topology table.

Types of messages/ packets in EIGRP
1. Hello
2. Update ( RTP)
3. Query (RTP )
4. Reply (RTP )
5. Acknowledgement.

1) Hello packet –

1. It is used to establish & maintain Neighbor relationship between the router.

OR
2. It used to discover NBR relationship.
3. Keep alive.
4. Hello timer = 5 sec
5. Hold down timer = 15 sec
6. Hello packets are sent trough multicast address = 224.0.0.10
7. Hello packets can be Multicast / Unicast.

Content of Hello packets or messages

To remember = VOC, AAA, SKHI

1. Version = 2 (by default )

2. Op Code = Hello , ACK = 5 , Update = 1 , Query = 3 , reply = 4. -----------→ Tells message type.
3. Checksum Field =
4. ACK = 0
5. Sequence = 0
6. AS Number =
7. K- value = K1 , K2 , K3, K4 , K5 .
8. Hold down timer = 15 sec
9. Authentication = ( Optional If you have enabled )
10. IOS Version = 12.4

EIGRP Neighbor-ship Parameter

1. AS Number must match
2. K-Value must match
3. Authentication must match ( Optional )
4. Network-id must match

2) Update message
1) It is used to share prefix information / network information of routing table to the
neighbors.
2) Update message can be unicast or multicast .
3) Use RTP protocol.
4) Update messages are sent between the neighbors to build the topology table and
routing table.
5) If there is static neighbor-ship between the router than update message will be sent
unicast.
6) Contain = ( Subnets / Prefix length , Bandwidth , Load , Delay , Reliability , MTU and
Hope count.

Content of update message

• Version
• OP Code
• Checksum
• Flag
• Sequence Number
• Acknowledgement
• AS
• Prefix
• Bandwidth, Load, Delay, Reliability , MTU ( Maximum transmission unit ) .

3 ) Query Message.

1) Query messages are sent by a router when successor route goes fail
and there is no feasible successor in the topology table.
2) The routers places the route in active state and sent a query to its
neighbors for an alternate route.
3) Query messages are sent as a multicast = 224.0.0.10.

4) Reply Message.

1) Reply packets are sent in response to query packets. The responding

router has an alternate route .
2) Reply packets / messages are sent Unicast .
OR

Packets are used in response to the query packets and are reliable.

5) Acknowledgement Message ( ACK ).

1) Ack message always sent as a unicast.

2) ACk is not used in the case of Hello.
3) It is just for RTP Packets.
