MEDIA
• is any communication outlet used to distribute information, entertainment and data. Essentially, media is
the method by which messages are distributed to an audience.
•is not only the gadgets we use but also any thing that people use as a tool to find and give information,
gather data and of course to communicate and more.
• It can be a book, television, newspaper, radio, social media and video games.

LITERACY
•is the ability to identify, interpret, understand and communicate
•Literacy skills include the ability to read, write, speak and listen effectively.

MEDIA LITERACY
•ability to comprehend and critique a variety of forms of communication.
• Media literacy "provides a framework to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and participate with messages in
a variety of forms from print to video to the internet.
•It builds an understanding of the role of media in society. So media literacy gave us the ability to understand
information that is presented to us and respond appropriate.

HISTORY OF MEDIA LITERACY

•The earliest attempts at media literacy education are often traced back to the British Film Institute's push in
the late 1920s and early 1930s to teach analytical skills to media users. Around the same time in America, the
Wisconsin Association for Better Broadcasters sought to teach citizens to be more critical consumers of
media. However, the goal of these initial media literacy efforts, which continued into the 1960s, was to
protect students from media by warning them against its consumption. Now media literacy become accepted
and successful in English-speaking countries including Australia, Canada, and Britain, it has yet to become a
standard part of the curriculum in the United States, where a lack of centralization has led to a scattershot
approach to teaching practical media literacy skills.

IMPACT OF MEDIA LITERACY

Statistics show that Americans spend an average of 473 minutes each day consuming media. What’s more, is
that the average daily social media usage worldwide is 145 minutes per day. Young people, in particular, tend
to spend large amounts of time browsing social media apps each day. This can be incredibly dangerous for
young minds, as we’ll discuss shortly. Many of us shape our opinions based on media, stay connected with
friends and family via media, and educate ourselves using media. There’s no doubt that the media influences
our lives in many different ways.

As we discuss media literacy, it’s important to distinguish between two central concepts which is the media
messages and media effects.

MEDIA MESSAGE
This is the underlying message and intention of all media that is distributed. Media messages usually aim to
entertain, persuade or educate. It’s possible for a media message to have multiple intentions, such as an
entertaining yet persuasive advertisement.

MEDIA EFFECT
is a measurable effect that occurs as a result of media messages. The type of effect and level of effect is
dependent on the media message itself, and the audience it is broadcasted to. Media has an impact to the
audience thoughts attitudes, and behaviour, often playing part in shaping modern culture. Such effects can
also reinforce existing beliefs, whether for good or ill.

ADVANTAGE OF MEDIA LITERACY

•Helps you comprehend a creator's objective.
In order to develop your own perspective on the subject matter, it's essential to understand whether a piece of
mass media is attempting to entertain, inform, or persuade you should know what is the main purpose of the
media.
•It develops you as a critical thinker.
Media literacy builds critical thinking skills by teaching you to thoroughly evaluate the different types of
media you consume. Essential skills of inquiry are especially important in media environments where
misinformation and fake news are common.
•It allows you to create responsibly
Media literacy teaches ethical methods for creating your own media so that you can become a more effective
communicator.
• It encourages self-expression
Media literacy teaches you to form your own opinions rather than just accepting a media message at face
value.
• It enables you to recognize an author's point of view
Every creator makes content with a specific point of view. Knowing this helps you open your mind to
different perspectives while also keeping you alert to bias.

DISADVANTAGE OF MEDIA LITERACY

• Fake news
the power of the internet, we are all able to share information with the world. We can share information on
social media, email, or even update open-source websites such as Wikipedia. With so much free reign on
sharing information, it’s inevitable that not all of it can be considered trustworthy.
•Media Bias
Journalists and news producers often paint situations in a light that favours one side of the story. We need to
be able to form our own opinions and views on situations. Media bias can lead to consumers not getting a full
understanding of scenarios and topics, and affect our opinions massively. This is why media literacy is
important; it allows us to think critically about the information we take
• Mental Health Issue
Sadly, a lot of the media available today poses a threat to the mental health of young individuals. Studies
have shown that between heavy social media is one of the reason why people anxiety and depression are
triggered.
• Internet and Media Access
Those who are not fortunate enough to have easy access to online platforms may not be as accustomed to
news formats and information online. When exposed to media they may struggle to differentiate fake
information from real information.

HOW TO BECOME MEDIA LITERATE

•Educate your self on media literacy more knowledge and information about the topic,
