Lesson 1

This document provides an introduction to functions and function notation. It defines a function as a set of ordered pairs where each x-value is paired with exactly one y-value. Functions can be represented using function notation like f(x) which means "f of x". The document gives examples of evaluating functions using function notation and determining function values from graphs.

L1 – Introduction to Functions
PART A – FUNCTIONS
________________: A set of ordered pairs where values of the independent variable are paired
with values of a dependent variable.

________________: A special type of relation. A set of ordered pairs (a relation) in which for each
x-value there is only ______ y-value.

Recall: Ordered Pairs (x , y )

(4 , 5)

___-coordinate ___-coordinate

Set of ordered pairs: {(1,1), (2, 4), (3, 9), (4, 16)}

MAPPING DIAGRAMS
Shows how the elements in a relation are paired.
When using a mapping diagram, the first set of numbers
(at the _________ of the arrows), is the domain and the second
set of numbers (at the _________ of the arrows) is the range.

1. State whether the following relations are functions.

a) { ( 1 , 5 ) ( 2, 6 )( 3 , 7 ) ( 4 ,8 ) } b) c) d)

e) f) g) { (−3 , 2 ) (−2 ,2 )(−5 , 2 ) ( 6 ,2 ) } h)

VERTICAL LINE TEST

Used when given a graph to determine if the relation is a function. If any vertical line passes through
______________________ point on the graph, then the relation is ______ a function.

2. State whether the following relations are functions.

a) b) c)

How can we determine if a relation is a function from its equation?

PART B – FUNCTION NOTATION & EVALUATING FUNCTIONS

f (x) is used to represent the value of the dependent variable for a given value of the independent
variable, x . We say it as “ f at x ”

This does _______ mean f multiplied by x

Any equation that is a function can be written using function notation.

This means that y and f (x) are __________________ in an equation of a function.

equation function
y=3 x +5 f ( x )=3 x +5

For example, y=2 x +3can be written as f ( x )=2 x +3

1. Evaluate the following functions

a) Given f ( x )=2 x +3, evaluate f (5). b) Given f ( x )=2 x +1 what is the value of x
such that f ( x )=5 ?

c) Given h ( x )=2 x 2+1 , find h ( a+ 2 ).

d) Given f ( x )=2 x 2−7 x−10 what is the value of x such that f ( x )=5 ?

2. Given the following graph y=f (x ), determine:

a) f (−3) b) f (1)

c) x when f ( x )=−7
