Lecture 10

This document provides an introduction to knitting as a fabric manufacturing method. It discusses that knitting involves interlooping yarn to form fabric. There are two main types of knitting: warp knitting and weft knitting, which both use interlinked loops of yarn. Common knitting terms are also defined, such as loop, stitch length, stitch density, wales, and courses. Finally, key differences between knitted and woven fabrics are outlined, such as knitted fabrics being produced from one yarn set while woven uses two, and knits generally having better elasticity and comfort.

3
Introduction to knitting

 Knitting is a process of manufacturing a fabric by inter

looping of yarn. Knitting is the second most important
method of fabric formation

4
Types of knitting

 There are two main industrial types of knitting:

warp knitting and weft knitting.
 Fabrics in both these categories consist
essentially of a series of interlinked loops of
yarn.

5
Common knitting terms
 Loop
It is a fundamental element of all knitted fabrics, it is a
basic unit consisting of a loop of yarn meshed at its base
with previously formed loops.
 Stitch Length
It is the length of yarn used in forming a single stitch. The
stitch length is one of the most important factor controlling
the properties of knitted fabrics.
 Stitch Density
Stitch density refers to the total number of loops in a
measured area of fabric.
 GSM
Fabric weight per square meter

6
 Wales
A wale is a vertical column of loops produced by the same
needle knitting at successive knitting cycles. The number
of Wales determine the width of the fabric and they are
measured in units of Wales per centimeter

 Courses
Courses are rows of loops across the width of the fabric
produced by adjacent needles during the same knitting
cycle and are measured in units of courses per centimeter

7
 Wales of the fabrics determines its width and also no. of
wales of a fabric are equal to no. of working needles of
that machine
 Courses of the fabric tells about the no. of working
feeders of that machine.
