This document describes a lesson plan that uses the online platform Padlet to teach 2nd grade students about the phases of the moon. The lesson plan aims for students to be able to identify the eight phases of the moon and describe how the moon's appearance changes over time. Students will explore the Padlet individually, taking notes and discussing the moon phases. The teacher will assess students through observation, questions, and quizzes. This lesson allows for differentiated learning by giving students flexibility in how they engage with the material online at their own pace.

Lesson Idea Name: The Moon and Moon Phases Padlet

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd Grade - Science

Content Standard Addressed:

S2E2.d Use data from personal observations to describe, illustrate, and predict
how the appearance of the moon changes over time in a pattern.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
able to do by the end of this lesson:

Digital Citizen- 1.2.b Online Behavior I would like students to be able to engage in
collaboration online in a safe and positive way. I
would also like my students to be able to
discuss and understand the phases of the moon
Students engage in positive, safe, legal and and information about the moon. I would like
ethical behavior when using technology, students to be able to identify all eight phases
including in social interactions online or of the moon.
when using networked devices.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?

Students will be able to identify what plants and animals need to live and be able to tell the
similarities and differences between the needs.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s): (Delete instructions before adding to your Weebly. If you are unable to
add a check mark to the box, remove the box and use a bolded X to identify your selection. DO NOT

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

I will first introduce the topic of the moon and then I will tell students that we are going to be using
an online platform to learn about the moon. I will have student learning targets posted on the board
and go over them before the students explore the padlet. I would then allow the students to
explore the padlet. I would have them taking notes alongside doing the padlet for future knowledge.
I will access students' previous knowledge by asking students what they know about the moon and
space while also asking them to refer to personal experiences in seeing the moon change. I will then
assess students by walking around the room providing real time assistance and by using the quizzes
at the end of the lesson. Students will use instructional time to explore the padlet, taking notes, and
replying to classmates online through the padlet.

Managing student learning:

I do not think this tool will cause a shift in behavior as much as other tasks. This task will be
completed as an individual task allowing for collaboration through discussions online on their
thoughts and experiences. I will use 3 10 minute timers to check in with students. I will also be
walking around the room to provide support to help manage student learning.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson used the Universal Design for Learning by really supporting the engagement aspect. This
is by allowing the students to engage in coursework in a new way and allowing them to discuss the
information being taught through an online platform instead of in person active discussion which is
beneficial for differentiation for students who like to stay quiet in class which promotes further
engagement.

Reflective Practice:

I think this tool will help students build their understanding in a different way than traditional lecture
through building off of their personal experiences and allowing students to watch the videos on their
own time and not forcing the students to stay aligned with everyone. This also allows students to
take their time expressing their thoughts. I also look forward to implementing this lesson to see
students progress as in comparison to a traditional lesson.
