Assignment 02

This document contains 12 tutorial problems related to multivariable calculus concepts such as limits, continuity, partial derivatives, directional derivatives, extrema (maxima and minima) of functions. The problems involve analyzing functions for these properties and concepts at points or on surfaces in 2D and 3D space. They also involve optimization problems with constraints.

(1) Examine the following function for the existence of limit at (0, 0). Discuss the continuity
as well. The expressions below give the value at (x, y) 6= (0, 0). At (0, 0), the value
should be taken as zero:
(x2 − y 2 ) 2x4 + 3y 4 x2 + y 2 xy(x − y) x4 y 4
(i)xy 2 , (ii) , (iii) (iv) , (v) .
x + y2 x2 + y 2 tan xy x2 + y 2 (x2 + y 4 )3
(2) Let f (0, 0) = 0 and

x sin(1/x) + y sin(1/y), if x 6= 0, y 6= 0
f (x, y) = x sin 1/x, if x 6= 0, y = 0
y sin 1/y, 6 0, x = 0.
if y =

(0, 0).

(3) Examine the following functions for the existence of partial derivatives at (0, 0). The
expressions below give the value at (x, y) 6= (0, 0). At (0, 0), the value should be taken

(4) Examine the following functions for the existence of directional derivatives and differ-
entiability at (0, 0). The expressions below give the value at (x, y) 6= (0, 0). At (0, 0),
the value should be taken as zero:

continuous at (0, 0)?
