Concept Development
Character
The people and animals in a story are called the characters. There are main
characters around which the story centers. Other characters may not be as important
as the main characters but are otherwise essential in creating the story.
Setting
When and where a story takes place is the element called the setting. A
story may be set in a real or imaginary place. It may be set in the past, the present,
or the future. Sometimes the setting is clearly stated. With some stories, you need to
figure out from the details in the story where the setting is.
Plot
A third element of the story is the plot. This refers to a series of events in
the story. The plot usually focuses on a problem or an action that the characters
confront and try to solve. We say the plot thickens when the action builds towards an
important moment in the story called the climax. The climax may call for a decision, a
discovery, or an event. The climax is said to be the turning point of the story and is
also referred to as the highest point in the story. When the problem is solved, the
story comes to a close. Not all short stories offer clear solutions. Sometimes, the
reader is left to conclude for himself how the story will end.
