The Philippines is home to the world’s biggest pear- the Pearl of Allah. But do you know how pearls are formed?
Out of pain can come a beautiful jewel like the pearl. A grain of sand that enters the oysters irritates it and causes it pain.
The oyster reacts by releasing a liquid to ease the pain. The liquid accumulates around the foreign material and covers it. This marks
the beginning of the pearl. Constant pain because of the irritation of the foreign material causes the liquid to accumulate around the
foreign body. The liquid then hardens and form a pearl. So the pearl is a consequence of the oyster’s resistance to the pain of a
foreign object.
The story of the pearl is reflected all around us. When there is no suffering and no struggle, there is no prize. The prize of
the pains of the oyster is a beautiful pearl.

Manuel L. Quezon

Before noon of December 12, 1941, I received a telephone call from General MacArthur to inform me the he was
sending his aide – de – camp, Lieutenant Colonel Huff, to see me on a very important and urgent matter. I told the
general I would see his aid immediately. When Colonel Huff arrived, he told me that General MacArthur wanted me
to be ready on four hours’ notice to go with him in the Corregidor.
I was shocked. I never imagined that I would ever have to take refuge in Corregidor. I had known for years
that the fortress of Corregidor had been built as the last stronghold of the American forces in the Philippines and
