1. What do you know about the period of the painting? Include in the readings/research the
following:

The period of painting showcases the power of paints as the medium for sending
messages. This is a chronological list of periods in Western art history. An art period is a
phase in the development of the work of an artist, groups of artists or art movement.

-Biographical data of the artist, information about how the painting was significant at that
time.

● Juan Luna
Juan Luna de San Pedro y Novicio Ancheta was a Filipino painter, sculptor and a
political activist of the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th century. He
became one of the first recognized Philippine artists.
- Spoliarium 19th century
This is the most valuable oil-on-canvas painting. It is the largest painting
in the philippines. It won First Gold Medal in 1884 as an entry to the
prestigious Exposition de Bellas Artes in Madrid.

interpretation where the lady sitting in the sofa was identified as a flirt and
prostitute, by tragic and biographical interpretation which discusses the
personal experience of Luna with his wife who had an affair with .
● Fernando Amorsolo
Fernando Cueto Amorsolo was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine
landscapes. Nicknamed the "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art," he was the first-
ever to be recognized as a National Artist of the Philippines.

● Juan Luna is one of the artists who believed in the huge impacts of art in shaping
society. He applied his outstanding skills in painting through wisely utilizing
themes,elements of arts, and principles of design in creating his masterpiece. In
particular, Luna depicted a catastrophe in his painting: Spoliarium. It is through the
effective use of lines, shapes, light, and space that he was able to portray emotions and
messages to the viewers. It
3. What evidence can you provide to support your claim on the significant depiction of the
painting?
● Spoliarium is a symbol of our social, moral, and political life: the
injustices,prejudices, and immorality. One of the pieces of evidence that affirms this
important depiction is the interpretation of Lopez-Jaena about the painting. He stated
that “behind the canvas,behind the painted figure there floats the living image of the
Filipino people sighing its misfortune. Because… the Philippines is nothing more than a
real ‘Spoliarium’ with all its horrors." Moreover, in the article “The Spoliarium'' by Nicole
Co, she stated that“The Spoliarium represents various emotions being portrayed
especially during that period wherein people are too brutal and vicious to value the
importance of life
