1. Introduction
1.1 General
The self-powered protection relay IKI-35 is a protection relay made for distribution applications and due
to its design and ease of use best applicable in Ring Main Units and compact substations.
The self-powered protection relay IKI-35 is applicable for monitoring and protection of distribution
network transformers with nominal currents 10 A ... 250 A. By means of split-core CTs overcurrents and
short circuit currents can be detected in the feeders.
The device offers an overcurrent stage (ANSI 51), a short circuit stage (ANSI 50), an external fast trip
stage and an earth fault stage (ANSI 50N and 51N) as well. The overcurrent stage and the earth fault
stage can be selected as definite minimum time DMT (=UMZ) stage or inverse definite minimum time
IDMT (=AMZ) stage. The IDMT-stage offers four curves according to IEC 60255-3.
Earth faults can be detected either by calculation of residual current from the three phase current
sensors (ANSI 50N/51N) or by installation of an optional balanced core CT at input E for measuring non
directed sensitive earth-fault currents (ANSI 50G, 51G). The IKI-35 is supplied by the CTs and buffered
by a Lithium-cell battery.

2. Handling/Installation
During installation of IKI-35 to the split-core CTs the high voltage must be shut down. During installation the five
safety rules (golden rules) must be observed. Uninstalled current injected CTs must be short circuited at their
signal lead ends.
Split-core CTs are only suitable for installation at touch-proof high voltage cables. For installation at non
shielded high voltage cables separate CTs are available on request.
Battery: Lithium-battery, designed to supply the IKI-35 for >= 15 years. After 15 years a battery test is
recommended, or the battery should be replaced (see chapter 5).
If requested, the IKI-35 can be supplied alternatively by any auxiliary voltage 24 ... 230 VAC/DC. The auxiliary
voltage can be installed at the clamps 13, 14 and will also be buffered by the battery.
In case the IKI-35 is fed permanently through the CTs with Ip > 10 A or supplied by an auxiliary voltage the life-
time of the battery will be expanded to over 20 years.
The three split-core CTs (IKI-LUM_d92) are to be mounted on the single-cores of the high voltage cable and
installed on the clamps 1-6. The cable shields must be insulated and led back through the CTs (figure 2.3.1 a) so
that only the primary current flows through the CT. Dependent on the cable types the terminations must be
insulated (figure 2.3.1 b).
By means of a balanced core CT at input E (clamps 7, 8) also sensitive earth faults Ie> below 20 A or Ie> below
0,7xIn can be detected. The balanced core CT covers all three single cores. The common shield of a three core
cable or the single shields of single core cables must be insulated and led back through the balanced core CT.

The measuring inputs of IKI-35 are adapted to usage with the CT-types IKI-LUM_d92, i.e. the burden of the relay and the output
power of the CTs are adapted to each other. Therefore installation of standard CTs with secondary currents of 1 A or 5 A is not
allowed!

The overcurrent I> to observe is often close to or somewhat below the inrush current. During inrush current the
IKI-35 should not trip. Generally overcurrent tripping time tI> should be chosen higher than the expected inrush
time. The short circuit current value I>>, which is switched off after short circuit delay time tI>>, should be always
selected considerably over the inrush current value. Values of inrush currents and inrush durations have to be
taken from the documentation of the transformer manufacturers. The IKI-35 additionally offers an inrush rejection
algorithm, that may be activated in the menu. If the transformer is switched from power-off state (I<2A, for all
three phases) to on state, the inrush rejection algorithm monitors, if overcurrent condition is present for all three
phase currents. A three pole clamp short-circuit has to be distinguished from the inrush current. In normal case it
is assumed, that a three pole transformer clamp short-circuit features greater current values than the inrush
event. The three pole transformer clamp short-circuit is assumed to be 10 times In (inrush currents may reach
values of up to 7 times In).
The inrush criterion is fulfilled if the three-phase current meets the following conditions after a currentless state:
- less than 10 times In
- less than I>> (if I>> stage active)
- greater than I> and
- longer than tI>
In this case, the tripping is rejected. If after 3s the inrush criterion is still fulfilled, then tripping is executed.
The inrush rejection method is activated in the setting menu of IKI-35.
In compensated networks it is suggested to select a long-time tIe> as inrush rejection to ensure that the inrush
current is delayed before a tripping may occur. Inrush rejection for Ie is also activated in the setting menu! In
solidly or low-resistive terminated networks an inrush rejection for Ie according to the following criterion is
introduced.
If, after a currentless state, the I0-current is
- less than 5 times Ie>
- greater than Ie> and
- longer than tIe>,
then the tripping is rejected. If after 3s the inrush criterion is still fulfilled, then tripping is executed.
The inrush rejection method is activated in the setting menu of IKI-35.
The figures below show the correct position of the transformer characteristic between the three pole transformer
clamp short-circuit current Isc and the inrush current. Then a separate inrush rejection should not be necessary.
In these cases it is assured by the setting that the inrush current does not cause tripping whereas the three pole
transformer clamp current is switched off with certainty surely.

The low power tripping coil type IKI-30TC was especially designed for application with IKI-35 and is installed at
clamps 15,16.
When IKI-30TC is used no external auxiliary voltage is required at clamps 13,14.
figure 6
The output 15,16 of IKI-35 is suitable for tripping-coils up to 24V, 0,1Ws (without the need of auxiliary voltage
supply for IKI-35). For coils with higher power requirement an coupling relay and an additional capacitive power
storage unit e.g. type PSU have to be installed.
Ie>-IDMT-Characteristic
For Ie> the time-current-characteristic type IDMT can be selected.
The Ie>-pick-up-value can be selected between 0,1 x In and 2 x In. But for the calculation of the time tIe> the
nominal current In is used. The device acts according the time-current characteristic as shown in the figure 7.1, a
mixture between DMT- and IDMT-characteristic.

The protection relay IKI-35 can be either tested by means of primary current injection into the CTs or secondary
sided by means of a simulation-voltage to be applied at the CT-clamps.
Attention:
- For Primary or Secondary test of IKI-35 it is highly recommended to deactivate the inrush-suppression.
- If the tripping has to be avoided during the testshould the tripping coil must be deactivated at the clamps.
- For the evaluation of the pick-up current accuracy the tolerances according to the technical data of IKI-35 have
to be observed.
- For the evaluation of pick-up time accuracy especially for IDMT-curves the current-tolerance has to be considered
in the formula of the IDMT.
8.1 Primary Current Test: Injection of primary current into the CTs by means of primary current
generator
The primary current test is performed by means of a primary current generator which is capable of simulating the
required pickup currents. The primary current should be injected according to figure A/B.
If the pickup currents could not be reached by the primary current generator, ampere-turns can be used to reach
the pickup currents. Alternatively a test winding with 50 ampere-turns is available, which can be plugged onto the
CT. These test windings allow to generate a primary current of up to 1000 A (see figure A/B).
For maintenance test or installation test secondary tests can be performed. For the secondary test the CTs have to
be removed at the clamps 1-6. At the CT-clamps an AC-voltage has to be applied for simulation. The AC-voltages
can be generated by means of most common AC-sources (e.g. protection testing devices). The secondary test is
performed according to figure C.
A: ampere-turns
B: Test-winding and IKI-Primary-Test-Box
Test winding with 200 windings, max. 30A (1 sec). Typ: IKI-LUM_PW
The CT type IKI-LUM_d92 can be also retrofitted with the test winding. As an option the IKI-Primary-Test-Box is
available; the IKI-Primary-Test-Box offers the same shape as IKI-35 and can be also installed at a standard C-bar.
The test-sockets inside the IKI-Primary-Test-Box allow to install a current source with currents of 1..30A. By means
of the test-winding primary currents acc. below diagram are generated.
ATTENTION: Currents above 1A must not be applied for more than 1sec.!
