Date: 09.02.2021 Time: 30 Minutes
Lesson No: 06
I. PREPARATION:
Title: Series and Parallel combination of Resistors
(1) Objectives: (After teaching this lesson the trainees will be able to)
1. Define series and parallel circuits.
2. Explain the series and parallel combination of Resistance
3. Use formulas to calculate the total Resistance in parallel and series circuit
(2) Teaching Aids: Chalkboard, chalk, charts, computer system, projector, etc.
(3) Introduction:
(a) Review: Introduction to Basic Electrical circuits.
(b) Motivation: A common application of series circuit in batteries, where cells connected in series
are used to obtain a convenient operating voltage.

Definition In series circuit, all components are connected end to Use chart, project
end, forming a single path for current flow. In a
parallel circuit all components are connected across
each other.
Use Car headlights, street light, house lighting, alarm
systems
In case series connection the equivalent resistance
Req= (R1+R2+R3…. Rn)
In case of Parallel connection equivalent resistance
Formula 1/Req= 1/R1+1/R2+1/R3…… 1/Rn
Ask the Learners to identify
the parts

Series circuits The total resistance of two or more resistors connected in
series is equal to the sum of their individual resistances.
Parallel circuits The total resistance of all components adds the reciprocals
of the resistance Ri of each component and takes the
reciprocal of the sum.
Application
(1) Most household electrical wiring.
(2) Design of many electrical components such as-
different kind of computer hardware. Q
(3) In lightning system, such as in a house or on a
Christmas tree.
(4) In car system, dc power supply work parallelly.
Solve problem
III. APPLICATION:
1. What is series parallel connection?
2. Draw the series & parallel circuit diagram
3. What is the application of series & parallel connection?
Summary:
Define series and parallel circuits, Differentiate between series and parallel combination of
Resistance, formulas to calculate the total Resistance in parallel and series circuit.
