Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 5

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
a. Distinguish the differences between regular and irregular polygon.
b. Draw the polygon according to its sides.
c. Actively participates in searching and taking pictures of polygons around the school
premises.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Describing and Comparing Properties of Polygons (Regular and Irregular Polygons)
Materials: PowerPoint Presentation and cut-outs
References: Grade 5. 21st Century Mathletes, p. 220-225
III. Procedure

Teacher Activity Student Activity

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer
Class, let us all stand for our prayer. Our Father……. Amen.
President please lead the prayer.
2. Greetings
Good morning, class! You may now sit. Good morning, Miss Nunez.

My name is Teacher Genalyn Nunez and I will

be your Math Teacher for today.

3. Attendance
Who are absent today?
Ok, thank you None Teacher.
4. Motivation

Before we proceed to our lesson today, we

will play a game first.

Who wants to play? Me teacher

(Students raise their hands.)
We will play the pass the balloon game.

Instruction:
You will pass the balloon to your seatmate,
and when the music stops, the last person
who holds the balloon will pop it. Each
balloon has a small piece of paper that has a
polygon name, and you need to go to the
front to choose the right shape for it.

(Starts to play the music)

(Pause the music) (Students start to pass the balloon.)
(Student pop the balloon)
(Starts to play the music)
(Pause the music)

(Starts to play the music)

(Pause the music)

Ok, now let’s check if your answer is correct.

Very good class!

Let’s give a kokak clap to your classmates One kokak, one two kokak kokak, one two
who got the correct answer. three kokak kokak kokak.

B. Discussion

Our topic for today is all about regular and

irregular polygons.

In your own opinion or idea, what is a regular

polygon?

Yes___? (students answer may vary)

(call a pupil)

Ok, thank you for your answer.

How about irregular polygons?

Yes___? (Students answer may vary)
(call a pupil)

Thank you for your answer.

Now, let me introduce to you the two types

of polygons. Who can read?
Yes___?
(call a pupil)

A regular polygon whose sides and interior (Student read the definition)
angles are congruent. The measures of all the
sides of a regular polygon are equal. And, the
measures of all the interior angles of a
regular polygon are equal.

Example: Quadrilateral

An irregular polygon is a polygon whose sides (Student read the definition)

and interior angles are not congruent. The
measure of at least one side of an irregular
polygon is different. It then follows that at
least one of the interior angles of an irregular
polygon has also a different angle measure

Example: Irregular Quadrilateral

Here’s the another examples of regular and

irregular polygon.

No. of Name Regular Irregular

Sides
Triangle
3
4 Quadrilatera
l

5 Pentagon

6 Hexagon

7 Heptagon

8 Octagon

9 Nonagon

10 Decagon

How many sides are there in Triangle?

Yes___? (Students raise their hands.)

(call a pupil)
A triangle has three sides.
Very good!

Triangle has three sides.

Let’s proceed to the next polygon. What

polygon is this? What can you tell me about
it?

Yes___?
(call a pupil) (Students raise their hands.)

Very good!
That is Quadrilateral, and it has four sides.
This is Quadrilateral and it has four sides.

Continue for pentagon, hexagon, heptagon,

octagon, nonagon, and decagon. (students
should be able to identify the number of (The students will continue to identify the
sides) number of sides and angle for each polygon.)

Very good, everyone. I know that you’ll find it

easy to name and identify the different types
of polygons. Now, can somebody give me the
answer? What do you call to a polygon A polygon having an equal sides and angles is
having equal sides and angles? regular polygon.

Brilliant!

How about a polygon whose sides and

interior angles are not congruent?

Very good!
Irregular polygon.
C. Analysis

You got it! Let’s have a short activity before

you take the quiz.

Instruction:
Identify if the given is a regular polygon or an
irregular based on the properties of the
polygons.

1. Irregular polygon

2. Regular polygon

3. Irregular polygon

D. Generalization

Now, class, remember that polygons are

closed plane figure made up of three or more
line segments joined at their end points and Triangle, Quadrilateral, Pentagon, Hexagon,
it is named according to the number of its Heptagon, Octagon, Nonagon, and Decagon.
sides. Can you again tell me the different
types of polygons?

E. Application

Get a piece of paper and draw the following

polygons.

1. Pentagon
2. Triangle
3. Quadrilateral (Students start to draw)
4. Hexagon

Now that you’re done answering, let’s have a

group activity. We will play a puzzle game,
and I need four groups.

Instruction:
Assemble the photos and then glue them to
the manila paper. After pasting the whole
photo, you need to write below the picture if
it’s regular polygon or irregular polygon, how
many sides there are, and the name of
polygon.

Am I clear?

You only have 5 minutes to finish the activity. Yes, teacher

You may now start.
(Students start to paste the picture together
Times up! with their groups)
Let’s now check if all the groups got the right
answers.

Very good, children.

IV. Evaluation

Identify the shapes whether it is REGULAR or

IRREGULAR. Write your answer on the sheet
of paper.

1. IRREGULAR POLYGON – Three sides

2. IRREGULAR POLYGON – Six sides

V. Assignment

On a short bond paper, make an artwork

depicting the different polygons seen in real
life.
