Using the Linear Regression Functions on your TI-84 Plus Calculator

1. Entering Data using the STAT button

Press [STAT] button to access the Statistics function

Press [1] button to edit data list

Enter the first data set (X values) in L1

Enter the second data set (Y values) in L2

Use the [ARROW] buttons to move UP and DOWN

and LEFT and RIGHT. [DEL] to delete.

Move cursor to column heading and press [CLEAR]

then [ENTER] to delete the data in the entire column

Press the [2nd] function [MODE] button to

[QUIT] (exit)

2. Turning StatDiagnostics ON
Press the [MODE] button
Check [StatDiagnostics] option is [ON]

If not use [ARROW] buttons to select [ON] and

press [ENTER]

Press the [2nd] function [MODE] button to [QUIT] (exit)

3. Using the Linear Regression function LinReg(ax+b)

Press [STAT] button

Use left [ARROW] button to move to [CALC] option

Press [4] button to use LinReg(ax+b) options

Check the correct X and Y--values are entered in Xlist and Ylist
X-values
Y-values
FreqList must be blank otherwise you will get incorrect values.

Press [ENTER] or down [ARROW] to Calculate values

Press [ENTER] to calculate the LinReg(ax+b) variables

Line of Regression: Y = aX + b
a = gradient
b = y-intercept
r = correlation coefficient
r2 = coefficient of determination

Note: If the r and r2 values

are not displaying, make

sure the StatDiagnostics

function is turned ON

If STAT DIAGNOSTICS is ON and r and r2 values are still not displaying, try memory reset:

[2nd] MEM > Reset (all)

3. Plotting the data and line of regression
Press the [2nd] function [Y=] button to access the
[STAT PLOT] function
Check [Plot 1] option is [ON] if not press [ENTER] then use right [ARROW]
button to select [ON]

Check [ ] scatter plot option is selected scatter plot

X-values
Y-values

Press the [2nd] function [MODE] button to [QUIT]

Press [ZOOM] then [9] to plot the data using the [ZOOM STAT] option

Y-values

v
Y = aX + b
Line of Regression
Enter linear regression equation
y = aX + b from the calculated values

for a and b using LinReg(ax+b)

function manually using [Y=] option
X-values
Alternative Method:
note does not always work → often gives an error message

Accessing the Correlation Coefficient, r and the

Coefficient of Determination, r2
Press [VARS] button

Press [5] button to access Statistics options

Use left [ARROW] button to move to [EQ] option

Press [7] button to display r = correlation coefficient

Press [8] button to display r2 = coefficient of determination

Alternative Method:
more complicated method to store linear regression equation automatically

To plot line of regression can use option to save linear regression equation:

Use down [ARROW] button to move to [Store RegEQ] option

then press [VARS] button then use left [ARROW] button to
move to [Y-VARS] option
X-values
Y-values
Press [1] to store the linear regression equation as a function then

press [1] to store the linear regression equation as variable Y1

Y-values

Y = aX + b
Line of Regression
v
EAASIER METHOD
Enter linear regression equation y = aX + b
from the calculated values for a and b

using LinReg(ax+b) function manually

using [Y=] option X-values
