Amiga OS 4.

0 (w/July 2007 Updates) Install CD for Mac Mini G4 (Moana Loader)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This CD will allow you to boot the Amiga OS 4.0 kernel and run the Amiga OS 4.0
installer.

The knows issues with the Moana loader are:

* Displays image that USB stack has not been loaded (USB keyboards and mice work)
* Doesn't detect the Mac Mini built-in Ethernet
* Doesn't detect the Mac Mini AirPort Extreme card
* Doesn't detect the Mac Mini Bluetooth device
* Probably a lot more I've not come across yet!

Testing has been performed with a Mac Mini G4 with the following specs:

Model Name: Mac mini

Model Identifier: PowerMac10,2
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
Processor Speed: 1.5 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.4f0

This CD may/may not work on other Mac Mini G4 models.

Instructions for booting:

-------------------------

1) Boot into Open Firmware (Hold down "Option" "Command" "o" "f" when powering on)
2) First time users will only need to enter the following command once:
setenv boota-device cd:
3) Begin loading the OS 4.0 kernel/kickstart by typing in the following command:
boot cd:\slb_v2
4) Select either option:
"1. Amiga OS 4.x: CDROM MM_Full_silent_USB" - for Mac Mini G4 1.5GHz/64MB
Radeon models
"2. Amiga OS 4.x: CDROM MM_Full_silent_USB_ATI_safe" - for all other Mac Mini
G4 models
5) Press "Enter" at the "Installed mem: 1024 mega bega" prompt
6) Press "Enter" at the "About to build the copy of the OF tree; Code start at
0x01800000; press any key" prompt
7) Press "Enter" at the "All init done; about to kill OF and start ExecSG; press
any key" prompt

At this point, the screen should turn black and after a few seconds, the CD drive
will spin up.

Eventually you'll see an AmigaDOS window displaying the message "USB stack not
running.". Oddly enough, USB keyboards and mice seem to work.

7) You'll be greeted with a "Welcome to the Amiga OS 4.0 Install CD" window, click
on "Proceed"
8) On the next window, select your language, country and time zone and click "Use"
9) A window will pop up and will ask how the system time should be updated. Click
on "System"
10) A window will pop up with the message "Your system time has been updated".
Click on "OK"
11) Shortly after, a window will appear to advise you that you must select a
keyboard. Click "OK"
12) Select your keyboard and click "Use"

If the start up appears to stall between steps 10 and 11, press "Ctrl C" and you
should see a "WAIT: ***Break" message appear. The installer will now continue.

Good luck!

Using the Amiga OS 4.0 with the Mac Mini G4 carries risks primarily due to hardware incompatibility issues. The failure to detect important components like Ethernet, AirPort Extreme, and Bluetooth can lead to a lack of vital functions such as networking and wireless connectivity. This may limit the device's usability in networked environments or for users depending on these features for connectivity. Furthermore, the installer’s sporadic stability, indicated by the need for manual interventions, raises concerns about the overall reliability and user experience of the system .

The boot process for Amiga OS 4.0 on a Mac Mini G4 using the Moana Loader involves several technical steps, indicating limited user-friendliness. Users must enter Open Firmware and input specific commands to start the OS kernel. Multiple options are provided for different Mac Mini configurations. Throughout the installation, users face several prompts requiring interaction, such as confirming system time updates and selecting keyboard settings. These complexities, combined with the need for initial technical inputs in Open Firmware, may pose challenges for non-technical users, reflecting a less intuitive and more technical installation process .

The installation guide for Amiga OS 4.0 on a Mac Mini G4 provides step-by-step instructions, including specific commands and prompts to be addressed in Open Firmware, offering user guidance throughout the process. However, it assumes a certain level of technical competence, as seen in instructions for entering specific firmware commands and options. The guide provides some troubleshooting advice, like pressing "Ctrl C" if the process stalls, which supports users through potential issues. Overall, while the guide is detailed, the technical nature may not fully cater to all users' needs without additional support .

The primary limitations of the Amiga OS 4.0 installer on a Mac Mini G4 include its inability to detect several of the Mac Mini's built-in hardware components. Specifically, it does not detect the Mac Mini’s built-in Ethernet, AirPort Extreme card, or Bluetooth device. Additionally, although the installer displays a message that the USB stack has not been loaded, USB keyboards and mice somehow function. These issues suggest that the installer may face significant challenges in fully utilizing the Mac Mini G4's hardware capabilities .

The Amiga OS 4.0 installer’s inability to detect certain Mac Mini G4 built-in components, such as the Ethernet, AirPort Extreme card, and Bluetooth device, implies significant limitations in hardware compatibility. This lack of detection means that users cannot utilize these network and connectivity features, potentially reducing the functionality and performance of the system for tasks requiring internet connectivity or wireless peripherals. This limitation could affect the applicability of Amiga OS 4.0 for users who rely on these hardware features .

The installation process could be improved by streamlining the Open Firmware procedure, perhaps by automating the configuration settings and reducing the reliance on user input for technical options. Enhancing the compatibility of the installer to automatically detect and configure Mac Mini G4's hardware components, including network adapters and Bluetooth, would contribute significantly to ease of use. Additionally, providing a more intuitive user interface during the installation, coupled with comprehensive troubleshooting prompts and solutions, would help in simplifying the process for users with varying levels of technical expertise .

To begin loading the Amiga OS 4.0 kernel from the install CD, users must first boot into Open Firmware by holding "Option", "Command", "o", "f" during power-up. They must then enter the command "setenv boota-device cd:" to specify the boot device and "boot cd:\slb_v2" to load the kernel. These steps are significant because they involve setting the boot path and initiating the kernel loading process, which are both crucial for successful system startup. Incorrect input could prevent the operating system from booting, highlighting the need for accuracy and understanding of these commands .

The installation instructions for Amiga OS 4.0 address different hardware configurations of the Mac Mini G4 by providing two separate boot options: "MM_Full_silent_USB" for the 1.5GHz/64MB Radeon models and "MM_Full_silent_USB_ATI_safe" for all other models. This approach indicates an awareness of the variations between models and attempts to cater to specific hardware characteristics. However, the effectiveness of these solutions is not clear if the models diverge significantly beyond these two clear-cut categories, suggesting there might be gaps in accommodating other unique configurations or future model updates .

If the installation process stalls between selecting keyboard settings and the proceeding steps, the troubleshooting step provided is to press "Ctrl C", which should result in a "WAIT: ***Break" message allowing the installation to continue. This suggests that the installer may experience occasional stalls and interruptions, indicating some instability and the need for manual intervention to complete the installation process successfully .

The initial configuration settings for Amiga OS 4.0 on a Mac Mini G4 are handled through a series of prompts. After booting into Open Firmware and starting the installation, users are required to select their language, country, and time zone. The installation process then prompts the user to address system time updates and keyboard selection. These steps ensure that the system is set up with basic locale and time settings necessary for efficient operation .
