EEE F111: ELECTRICAL SCIENCES (1st Sem 2022 – 23)

TUTORIAL- 2

Topic: R, L and C parameters, series and parallel connections of R, L and C circuits

1. A coil consists of 2000 turns of copper wire having a cross-section of 0.8mm2. The mean
length per turn is 80cm and the resistivity of copper is 0.02 µΩ-m. Find the resistance of the
coil and power absorbed by the coil when connected across 110V supply.
2. An aluminum wire of 7.5m long is connected in a parallel with a copper wire 6m long. When
a current of 5 A is passed through the combination, it is found that the current in the aluminum
wire is 3 A. The diameter of the aluminum wire is 1 mm. Determine the diameter of the copper
wire. Resistivity of copper is 0.017 µΩ-m and that of aluminum is 0.028 µΩ-m.
3. A platinum coil has a resistance of 3.146 Ω at 400C and 3.767 Ω at 1000C. Find the resistance
at 00C.
4. A field winding of a dc electromagnet is wound with 960 turns in series with resistance of 50
Ω when exciting voltage is 230V. The magnetic flux linking the coil is 0.005 Wb. Calculate
the Inductance of the coil and stored energy in the coil.
5. An iron ring 30cm mean diameter is made of square of iron of 2cm X 2 cm cross section and
is uniformly wound with 400 turns of wire of 2 mm2 cross-section. Calculate the value of the
inductance of the coil. Assume µr = 800.
6. A capacitor consists of 2 similar aluminum plates, each of 10 cm X 10 cm cross section
mounted parallel and opposite to each other. What will be the capacitance in µ𝐹 when the
distance between them is 1 cm and the dielectric is air? If the capacitor is given a charge of
500µC, what will be potential difference between the plates? If the inter-plate space is filled
with wax instead of air with µr = 4, then what will the capacitance and potential difference
across the plates?
7. The capacitance formed by 2 metal parallel plates each of 200 cm2 in area, separated by 4mm
thick dielectric is 0.0004µ𝐹. When a voltage of 20,000 V is applied to this capacitor, calculate
(a) the total charge of the plates, (b) the potential gradient in V/m, (c) retative permittivity of
the dielectric and, (d) the electric flux density.
8.

Find the equivalent resistance across AB terminals. If a voltage of 10V is applied across the AB
terminals, then find the currents through each resistor.
9. A 2 H inductor is connected in series with parallel combination of a 1 H and 0.5 H inductors.
If a circuit can be built with parallel connection of 2 such above said branches, then what is
effective inductance in the circuit? Neglect any mutual inductance in the connections.
10. Find the Ceq of the circuit shown in Fig. 2.
