GB General notes and information

Thank you for your confidence in us! The TDP pain therapy unit that you have purchased
is a top quality product from MEDISANA. In order to achieve the desired ef-
fect with your MEDISANA TENS TDP pain therapy unit in the long term, we
recommend that you read the following information on its use and maintenance
carefully.

Interesting Stimulation current can be used as follows:

1. to fight pain (TENS = Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)
information on
2. to build up the muscles (EMS = Electrical Muscle Stimulation)
stimulation cur- 3. as electro-acupuncture.
rent

Pain relief TENS is understood as electrical nerve stimulation through the skin.
(TENS)
Pain is a natural and important warning signal of our body telling us that “some-
thing is wrong”. If the reason for pain is diagnosed, but cannot or can only par-
tially be removed, a long-lasting, persistent pain may evolve (= chronic pain).
This pain is therefore useless in its original form as a warning signal and can
largely affect the life of the person suffering and possibly cause consequential
effects such as tension, depression or reduced quality of life.

Chronic pain can be treated with different methods: e.g. with medicaments or
operations, but also with alternative methods like acupuncture or TENS that are
free of side-effects.

On the one hand, the TENS treatment can block pain signals by interrupting
the transmission of pulses through the skin to the painful parts by means of
electric impulses. The signal “pain” is not passed on to the brain and thus not
felt as pain.

On the other hand, special TENS applications activate the body’s control mech-
anisms. Gentle electric currents make the body release so-called “endorphins”
that serve to reduce pain. The pain is thus stopped, eased or removed by the
body itself. This electrical stimulation cannot remove the causes or cure the dis-
ease, but change the painful feeling. Painless conditions or pain relief can help
the chronically suffering person have new, positive experiences, from which he
or she can gain power and energy.

Burst TENS Some people experience severe discomfort when exposed to frequencies un-
der 10 Hz (that is, 10 pulses per second). The burst program generates pulse
packets (“burst”) with frequencies of 80 to 100 Hz instead of a single pulse.

Muscle building With different EMS applications, muscles in the body can be stimulated, which
(EMS) are e.g. slackened after an operation, not trained comprehensively or insuffi -
ciently or which are tensioned. In the process, electric pulses cause slight mus-
cle contractions that can stimulate the muscular system “passively” (= without
the muscles itself acting).

General notes and information GB

Electro-acu- Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese healing method basing on the fact that
puncture there are points in the body (= acupuncture points), which, when stimulated
directly, affect (e.g. animation, pain relief, increase of the energy flow etc.) cer-
tain body zones or body organs. This stimulation can be achieved with needles,
massage, pressure (= acupressure) or with electric pulses, e.g. TENS. Detailed
information can be found in the relevant specialist literature.

Frequent ques- Can something happen to me, due to the current?

tions and their No, because the current strength of the electric pulses is so low that it remains
completely safe even with longer applications. However, the intensity should be
answers adjusted to the individual sensitivity.

Therefore, start each new application with the lowest intensity level and in-
crease it slowly according to the individual feeling. The application should never
be unpleasant.

I have no experience with stimulation current therapy yet. How can I use
the device without problems?
The MEDISANA TDP has been particularly developed to be easily used by
everyone. Even without special knowledge of the subject “stimulation current
therapy” you can treat yourself safely and easily with the preset programs.

How often can I use the electrodes?

According to the condition of your skin and if observing the application instruc-
tions you can use the electrodes up to 30 times.

Can I use other electrodes as well?

Yes, but you should only use original MEDISANA electrodes.

Application GB

Application The MEDISANA TDP can be used for all kinds of pain or for building up mus-
fields cles, for long-term therapy as well as for acute treatment.

PLEASE NOTE!
• Observe your doctor’s precise instructions and let him show you where
to apply the electrodes. For a successful therapy, the correct position
of the electrodes is an important factor. Carefully write down the set-
tings of frequency, pulse width and current selection your doctor recom-
mended. For this, you should take your MEDISANA TDP to the doctor
so that he can show you the settings.

Special textbooks provide you with detailed information concerning the subject
“pain, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)”, concerning indica-
tions and the exact electrode application for an effective success of treatment
as well as recommendations for the programs to use and notes on the settings
of frequency, pulse width, time of therapy and current selection.

Connecting the At the upper side of the device there are two sockets for the connection of elec-
trode lines. The left socket is for channel 1, the right socket is for channel 2.
cables
Connect at least one of the lines by putting the cable tightly into the socket. At
the other end of the cable, you fasten one electrode each.

Applying the Place the electrode(s) according to your area of pain (observe your doctor’s
instructions).
electrodes

The device must be deactivated before applying the electrodes!

• Before applying the electrodes, remove residual skin cream or ointment.
The skin has to be dry and free of fat.
• Do not place the electrodes on injured or infi amed skin areas (wounds,
pimples, skin rashs, reddenings etc.).
• Always place the electrodes according to the doctor’s instructions be-
fore you switch on the device.

In most cases, the electrodes are placed near the area of pain or directly on
the aching spot.
• For the muscle stimulating program, observe your doctor’s instructions con-
cerning the polarity.
• If you are not sure how to place the electrode’s polarity, exchange the red
(positive pole, anode) and white (negative pole, cathode) connectors at the
electrodes after half of the therapy time.

Feel for the area of pain, place one electrode directly on it and the second one
to the periphery of the area of pain or, on arms and legs directly opposite.

GB Application

Risk of electrical shock!

• Make sure that the electrodes cannot fall off during therapy. This can
cause an unintentional electric shock!
• Switch off the device immediately, if an electrode comes off the skin dur-
ing treatment.

Therapy examples:

Pain in the shoulder Tension in the neck and shoulder

and pelvis area area

For more figures on positioning the electrodes, see page 14.

Every patient reacts differently to stimulation current therapies, for this reason,
positioning the electrodes and program selection may differ depending on your
needs from the therapies presented here. You should take note of the parame-
ters, which are ideal for you (electrode position, program and current intensity).

Activation Before you turn the device on, you have to read the safety notes (page 26) and
description of the programs (starting on page 39).

To turn on the device briefl y push the button “ ”. The display panel will light
up and numbers and symbols will appear. After approx. ten seconds of key
inactivity, the display light will turn off to conserve battery power. However, the
symbols will remain visible. The device will automatically deactivate after ap-
proximately two minutes of key inactivity.

therapy mode whose parameters are provided in the tables beginning on page 15. In addition,
you can define yourself two programs in TENS mode and in one program in
and program EMS mode (see page 35).

Mode Therapy Programs

TENS Pain therapy P-01 – P-10,
U-01 – U-02
EMS Muscle building P-01 – P-77, U-01
Deep TENS Deep pain treatment P-01 – P-05
Acupuncture Pain treatment, mobilisation P-01 – P-08

• Briefily press the button “M” to switch to the next therapy mode. The se-
lected mode blinks on the left edge of the display panel.
• Select the program >by briefily pressing the button “P”. Hold the but-
ton down to increase the program number faster.

The recommended treatment points are shown on the fi gure for each pro-
gram. You can find examples of electrode positions on page 38.

Select the pulse The device can generate different current forms for the corresponding thera-
pies. They are classifi ed into biphasic and mono-phasic pulses. With bipha-
form sic pulses, the current circulates between the electrodes. With mono-phasic
pulses, the current only filows in one direction.

Mono-phasic is only used to stimulate muscles at low frequen-

cies (up to 40 Hz).
Bi-phasic short is preferably used at high frequencies to relief pain.
The positive (rectangular upward curve) and nega-
tive (rectangular downward curve) part follow di-
rectly after one another without interruption.
Bi-phasic long is used at high frequencies (starting at 60 Hz) both
for pain relief and also for muscle stimulation at low
frequencies (2 to 40 Hz). The positive and negative
parts of the pulse are separated from one another
by span width.

• Briefly pressing the button “Memory” switches to the next pulse form. The
selected pulse form appears on the display panel as a symbol .
