Course Description
Digital literacy skills in managing information and communication technology (ICT) are imperative in
today’s workplace as businesses continue to utilize technology to gain a competitive advantage. College
graduates who can locate, gather, and organize information using appropriate technology and information
systems will be able to compete for employment and be more successful in their jobs.
In this course, students are introduced to spreadsheets and database software concepts. Students build
technology skills as they apply formulas and functions, use pivot tables, and create charts using Microsoft
Excel to solve business problems, analyze data, and make decisions. Students learn how to create and
query data using Microsoft Access, a relational database management system, as well as how to
integrate database and spreadsheet data between Microsoft Office software programs.
Students will have an opportunity to attempt the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel Associate Exam.
MOS exams may be scheduled during class time or on weekends or evenings and must be proctored;
therefore students will be provided the exam date/time early in the semester so as to arrange their
schedules accordingly.
MOS exam criteria and details can be referenced on the Microsoft website. Centennial College School of
Business is a Certiport Authorized Test Center (CATC) and MOS exams are scheduled on various dates
throughout the year (refer to http://www.centennialcollege.ca/programs-courses/schools/school-of-
business/microsoft-office-specialistcertificate/ for details).

If students are unable to write a test they should immediately contact their professor or program Chair for
advice. In exceptional and well documented circumstances (e.g. unforeseen family problems, serious
illness, or death of a close family member), students may be able to write a make-up test.
All submitted work may be reviewed for authenticity and originality utilizing Turnitin®. Students who do not
wish to have their work submitted to Turnitin® must, by the end of the second week of class,
communicate this in writing to the instructor and make mutually agreeable alternate arrangements.
When writing tests, students must be able to produce official Centennial College photo identification or
they may be refused the right to take the test or test results will be void.
Tests or assignments conducted remotely may require the use of online proctoring technology where the
student’s identification is verified and their activity is monitored and/or recorded, both audibly and visually
through remote access to the student's computer and web camera. Students must communicate in writing
to the instructor as soon as possible and prior to the test or assignment due date if they require an
alternate assessment format to explore mutually agreeable alternatives.

Course Policies
Passing Grade: Students must submit completed assessments for both the Excel and Access sections of
the course. In addition, students must obtain an overall course grade of at least 50% in order to pass the
course.
Missed Tests or in-class assessments: Students who are absent from a test or in-class assessment with a
valid reason should request a make-up test/assessment. Students should email their professor
immediately upon absence (within 48 hours of absence) and arrange to submit professional
documentation (as determined by College) to their professor stating the reason for absence. Note: Make-
up test date may be scheduled at the end of the semester in the evening, the day, or on a weekend.
Late Homework Assignments: Students should submit assignments on or before the given due date.
Homework assignments submitted after the due date will incur a late assignment penalty of 20% loss of
marks per day late (including weekends and holidays). There will be no penalty for work missed for a
justifiable reason with supporting, professional documentation (as determined by the College) as
evidence of reason.
Students need to inform their professor of any situation that arises during the semester that may have an
adverse effect on their academic performance, and request, well in advance, any necessary
considerations according to the policies. Failure to do so will jeopardize any academic appeals.
College Policies
Students should familiarize themselves with all College Policies that cover academic matters and student
conduct.
All students and employees have the right to study and work in an environment that is free from
discrimination and harassment and promotes respect and equity. Centennial policies ensure all incidents
of harassment, discrimination, bullying and violence will be addressed and responded to accordingly.
Academic Honesty
Academic honesty is integral to the learning process and a necessary ingredient of academic integrity.
Forms of academic dishonesty include cheating, plagiarism, and impersonation, among others. Breaches
of academic honesty may result in a failing grade on the assignment or course, suspension, or expulsion
from the college. Students are bound to the College’s AC100-11 Academic Honesty and Plagiarism
