What is Multimedia

 Media in the newspaper, radio and TV – (mass media)

 Media in communications: cables, satellite, network –


(transmission media)

 Media in computer storage: floppy, CD, DVD – (storage


media)

 Media in HCI context: text, image, audio, video, –


(interaction media)

 Multimedia stand for any presentation that involves two


or more media, such as text, graphic, or sound.

 In Interactive Multimedia, users can choose their own


path through the presentation. When the user is given
the option of controlling the elements.
Hypertext

 Hypertext is a text which contains links to other text


information using hyperlinks which reader can
immediately access with just a mouse click.

 News outlets , research , Social media sites all have


hypertext links in their web pages.

Hypertext is made of non-linear links


that connect blocks of information
together.
Hypermedia

HyperMedia it also provides multimedia facilities such


as animation and sound.
Hypertext is a subset of hypermedia.
Categories of multimedia

LINEAR
 A Multimedia Project is identified as Linear when:
It is not interactive
User have no control over the content that is being showed to
them.
 Example:
A movie
A non-interactive lecture
NON-LINEAR
 A Multimedia Project is identified as Non-Linear when:

It is interactive

Users have control over the content that is being showed to


them.

 Example:

Games

Characteristics of a Multimedia System

A Multimedia system has four basic characteristics:

 Multimedia systems must be computer controlled.

 Multimedia systems are integrated.

 The information they handle must be represented digitally.

 The interface to the final presentation of media is usually


interactive.
Components of a Multimedia System

Now let us consider the Components (Hardware and Software)


required for a multimedia system:

 Capture devices | Video Camera, Video Recorder, Audio


Microphone.

 Storage Devices | Hard disks, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROM, etc


Components of a Multimedia System con

 Communication Networks | Local Networks, Internet,


other special high speed networks.

 Computer Systems | Multimedia Desktop machines,

Workstations.

 Display Devices | Speakers, Colour printers etc.


Authoring Tools

Use to merge multimedia elements (text, audio, graphic,


animation, video) into a project.

Example:
Microsoft Power Point
Importance of Multimedia

There are a number of fields where multimedia could


be of use. Examples are:-
Business (Sales / Marketing Presentation)
Education (Distance Learning & Searching)
Entertainment (Games & Movies)
