WEEK 6
TECHNIQUES OF INTEGRATION
PRACTICAL EXERCISE SET 2

1. Use an appropriate technique to evaluate the following integrals.

Z Z µ ¶
e− x 1 1 3
(a) dx (f) 1+ dx
1 + e− x x2 x
Z Z
(b) x2 log 2x dx x4
(g) dx
Z x10 − 4
Z ³ p ´
(c) 4x sec2 2x dx (h) log x + 1 + x2 dx
Z Z
¡ ¢ 7x + 17
(d) sin log x dx (i) ¡ ¢ dx
(2x + 3)2 x2 + 1
Z Z

2. Let I n = cosn x dx, where n = 0, 1, 2, . . ..

(a) Use integration by parts to derive the reduction formula:

1 n−1
In = cosn−1 x sin x + I n −2 , for n ≥ 2.
n n
Z Z
Hint. n
cos x dx = cosn−1 x cos x dx, let u = cosn−1 x and dv = cos x dx.

(b) Evaluate directly I 0 and I 1 .

(c) Hence find cos x dx and cos5 x dx.

3. In Question 5 of Practical Exercise Set 1, we applied the method of integration by parts

twice to derive the following results:
Z ¡ ¢
ax e ax a cos bx + b sin bx
e cos bx dx = +C (1)
¡ a2 + b 2 ¢
Z ax
e a sin bx − b cos bx
and e ax sin bx dx = + C. (2)
a2 + b 2
An alternative method, using complex exponentials, is more efficient and evaluates both
integrals simultaneously.

(a) Using Euler’s formula and integral of exponential functions to show that:
Z Z
a − bi ax ¡ ¢
e ax cos bx dx + i e ax sin bx dx = 2 e cos bx + i sin bx ,
a + b2
p
where i = −1 is the imaginary number.
(b) By equating the real and imaginary parts of both sides, obtain equations (1) and (2).
