FLUID PRESSURE

PRESSURE (p) is defined as force per unit area

𝑭 (𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎)
𝑝=
𝑨 ( 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑏𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑑)

FORCE ON SUBMERGED PLANE AREA

Consider a flat plate with area A that is submerged vertically

in a fluid (or liquid) so that its surface is parallel to the surface
of the fluid. A pertinent fact in hydrostatics is that the force F
due to the pressure of the fluid above this plate is

𝐹 = 𝛾ℎA
where 𝛾 is the unit weight of the liquid and ℎ is the vertical
distance of the centroid of the submerged plate.

By the fundamental theorem

𝐹 = 𝛾 න ℎ𝑑𝐴
Find the hydrostatic force on one face of the rectangle submerged in
water as shown in the figure. Specific weight 𝛾 of water = 62.5 pounds per
cubic feet

𝐹 = 𝛾ℎA 𝐹 = 𝛾ℎA
𝐹 = (62.5)(5)(90)
𝐹 = (62.5)(1)(16)

𝐹 = 1000 𝑙𝑏 𝐹 = 28,125 𝑙𝑏
A plate in the form of an isosceles triangle of base 6 ft and altitude 4 ft is
submerged vertically in water. Find the hydeostatic force on one side of
the plate if the base is parallel to and 3 ft below the surface of the water.
