Mobile of the most important electronic gadgets that we need in

our daily life. They appear to be almost indispensable

communication tools in today’s world. But there are many
disadvantages of mobile phones.

Many people have experienced being in an urgent business meeting

and seeing someone’s mobile phone starts ringing with an incoming
call. It is annoying and frustrating when you are in an important
meeting. The same thing can occur in movie theatres, family
gatherings, and even at weddings. As mobile phones are the main
tool for communication in these days, they can interrupt at any
time.

While people drive on roads, they also feel compelled to keep

communicating because of this constant form of communication.
And this is one of the main reason for road accidents. In India, at
least 20 persons die every day due to road accidents.

Mobile phones leave negative impacts on personal contacts. We

have seen many teenagers having dinner with their family
members. But instead of joining in conversations with them, they
keep themselves busy on their mobile phones scrolling through
news feeds on social media applications. In this way, many people
have lost their conversation skills which restrict them from
interacting with other people. Using cell phones can cause distance
in relationships too.

We still don’t know properly how dangerous mobile phone towers

are. But there are some shreds of evidence which show some points
toward tumours caused by cell phones. When we are looking for the
disadvantages of mobile phones, the biggest disadvantage of using
mobile phones is causing harm to one’s health.

Some negative impacts on a person’s health caused by mobile

phones are DNA damage, sleeplessness, eye cancer, infertility,
cardiac problems, chronic fatigue, etc. In a statistical survey, it is
proven that more than 90% college students sleep with their mobile
phones or next to them, 70% students said they couldn’t get enough
sleep, and 50% said they feel tired during the day. Using mobile
phones excessively can cause suppression in melatonin that alerts
the brain and harm both quality and quantity of sleep.
There are so many people in this world who use mobiles phones as
fashion. They upgrade the models of mobile phones they use
regularly. Mobile phones are costly nowadays, and buying new
models in a certain interval of time will make you spend too much
money.

Mobile phones contain so many private photos and videos.

Maintaining the privacy of these photos and videos have become
harder these days as the mobile manufacturing companies and
applications installed in the phones can go through your things in
your phones. Hackers can easily hack your mobile, and the private
things in your phone can be easily stolen.

Spam messages and calls also fall under the disadvantages of

mobile phones. Many of us receive unsolicited sales calls or texts
that are annoying and disruptive. Most of the times, these calls
don’t involve real callers but are generated from a computer.
Money-making scams are increasing day by day, and these scams
often target the most vulnerable members of our society.

In today’s world of science and technology, mobile phones are

essential for us. But over usage of any product is harmful. Similarly
using mobile phones too much can cause negative impacts on us.

When we use mobile phones constantly, we get addicted to mobiles

phones. Addiction to mobile phones can cause various mental
disorders to human bodies. Isolation in the people is caused due to
excessive usage of mobile phones.

13. They Cause Accidents
14. Vicarious Living
15. Health Problems
16. Under Surveillance
17. Conflict Minerals
18. Youth Crime
1. Constantly Distracting
It can be difficult to relax in a social situation in the age of mobile phones. A call or text
can come in at any time. Society generally expects you to have your phone switched
on, charged up, and within reach at all times. Many callers or text senders can become
frustrated or annoyed if they don't get an immediate response.

2. Socially Disruptive
Disruption can happen in multiple ways. For example, a phone goes off during a
musical or theater performance, somebody spends a dinner party texting rather than
engaging with the other guests, or a family event is disrupted by someone receiving an
important call from work. Mobile phones can destroy the atmosphere at events and
undermine social meetups.

3. Battery Power Keeps Running Out

One of the weaknesses of mobile phones is that they are so reliant on battery power. You regularly have
to check how much power is left, as well as find ways to recharge.
Battery power is improving all the time, but rather than improving the problem, all that happens is that
new models are made that are more power-hungry. On top of that, the overall life of a mobile phone
battery is just two to three years.

4. The Workday Never Finishes

Mobile phones make it easier for bosses to contact employees outside of regular work
hours. In the past, an employee was able to rest and enjoy some downtime when not at
work, but nowadays it's not uncommon for them to be contacted when commuting to
and from work, as well as in the evenings, or on weekends.

5. Photos and Video Mean No Privacy

One consequence of the prevalence of photo and video technology found on mobile
phones is that personal privacy has become harder to maintain. In almost any public
situation there is the possibility of being photographed or filmed. Once that media has
been captured, it can easily end up in the public domain via social media.

6. Constant Expense
Owning, using, and keeping an up-to-date mobile phone model is not cheap. The
problem is that as the technology is constantly advancing, phone models become
archaic relatively quickly, requiring you to upgrade. Then there is all the data and other
services that you need to pay for.
7. Spam
Receiving unsolicited sales calls or texts is annoying and disruptive. Often, they don't
even involve real callers but are computer-generated. Money-making scams are
becoming increasingly more common and sophisticated, and often target the most
vulnerable members of society.

8. Another Thing to Carry Around

Much has been made of the portability of mobile phones, but the truth is that they are
just another thing that we have to carry around with us at all times, along with our keys
and wallets.
Unlike keys and wallets, however, mobile phones are generally much more prone to
damage and breakage from impacts, direct heat, or exposure to water.
9. If You Lose Your Phone, You Lose
Your Life
For sure, it's useful to have all your contact info, photos, videos, and other information
on one device, but if you ever break or lose that device, you can find yourself with real
problems. Even just running out of power can result in you being unable to access vital
information and cause you real problems.

10. The Screen Is Too Small

In theory, phones are great devices for watching videos or live streaming, but in
practice, the screen is too small to fully appreciate a movie or sporting event. Even
playing games and performing everyday tasks like texting can be fiddly and frustrating.

11. Butt Calls and Mistakes

Calling someone by mistake or receiving accidental calls is surprisingly common when it
comes to mobile phones. This can be embarrassing, cause confusion, or waste time.
Texting or messaging mistakes can also occur.
Part of the problems is due to the compact size of phones and people using them in
busy situations where there are many distractions.

12. Hinders Sleep

There is good evidence that mobile phones contribute to sleep deprivation, especially
when people use them late at night or in bed. Teenagers in particular need good sleep
to help their developing brains, but offer suffer worst from mobile phone related sleep
problems.

13. They Cause Accidents

People get engrossed by their phones when they walk around. They collide with things,
bump into people, or even worse, step into the road without looking. The effects of
distraction caused to drivers are even worse, as making or receiving calls or texts, or
using the phone's other functions can all result in drivers not paying attention to the road
and result in serious accidents.

14. Vicarious Living

Many people no longer seem to be able to just enjoy the moment anymore without the
need to video, photograph, or write about it on social media. Pop concerts are full of
people videoing. Once in a lifetime experiences are not fully appreciated because
people are too busy photographing them and posting on social media.

15. Health Problems

Some studies suggest that the electromagnetic radiation produced by mobile phones
causes harm to human health. Brain cancer has been cited as a possible effect of long
term regular phone usage. However, it should be noted that there is no solid agreement
on the level of harm that may or may not be caused by mobile phones.

16. Under Surveillance

Mobile phones are increasingly used to track people's movements. This may seem fine
for catching criminals, but it is another step towards a surveillance society, where
citizens have no privacy and don't even know when or who might be tracking them,
never mind possess the ability to challenge the threats to their privacy.

17. Conflict Minerals

Certain rare metals are required in the production of mobile phones. The control of
these metals has caused conflict, especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo,
where 5.5 million lives were lost in the Second Congo War, a conflict fueled in part by
disputes over the control of the rare metals.

18. Youth Crime

There was a time when teenagers and children carried nothing of value, but now most
have mobile phones, and quite often expensive models. This makes them vulnerable to
street crime and general theft. It is a major problem in cities and urban areas.

Disadvantages usually come with advantages. It is generally seen that if something has advantages then
there are also some disadvantages. Similarly, despite many advantages, the increasing use of mobile
phones is creating many problems for the people and the environment. Following are some of the main
problems or disadvantages of mobile phones:

1) Addiction & Distraction

Since mobile phones are essential parts of human life, everyone carries them, be it at home,
offices, or while traveling. Many people, especially youth and children, are getting addicted to
mobile phones and they like to spend their precious time using their mobile phones in playing
games, listening to music, watching movies, etc. This way of connecting with mobile phones is
increasing which is dangerous for people as it is wasting time, distracting from goals, and even
causing health issues.

Mobile phones are not only becoming addictive but also becoming a means of distraction for
people. They can distract people from their work, study, and other essential purposes. It has
been seen in most of the children that whenever there is a sound from the mobile phone or a
notification, their attention is easily diverted during the studies. It is very common to see that
mobile phones often show notifications for new software and games to encourage people to try
them, which easily distracts people from their goals.

2) Health Problems
Mobile phones not only create stress, increase anxiety, or disturb the peace of mind, but also
affect health physically very dangerously. Constantly looking at a mobile screen can lead to
frequent headaches, which can also affect the eyesight over time. Children using mobile phones
often feel low vision problems and have to use glasses at a very young age.

Apart from eye problems, mobile phones also cause problems like ear pain and hearing loss.
This is usually due to prolonged calls because the sound causes the eardrum to vibrate. Instant
high and low-pitched voices often cause problems in the ears. Despite this, using the phone
continuously in certain body positions can lead to back pain and body aches as we do not move
much, blocking blood circulation. It also gives overall results in the form of laziness on regular
days.

3) Isolation
With the increasing use of mobile phones, people do not have time to talk to others. They
usually like to spend their time alone and use their mobile phones for gaming, chatting, listening
to music, watching movies, etc.

Although many people feel good about chatting on social media using their mobile phones, they
are not very social in their personal life when interacting face to face. Due to their lack of social
interaction and communication skills, they often prefer to live in isolation. It also affects their
career to some extent in the future.

4) Bullying
Bullying means posting, sharing, or sending negative, false, abusive, and/or threatening content
about or to another person using digital means like mobile phones. It is widely observed that
children become most aggressive and use mobile phones to bully others online. It has been
observed that children who have mobile phones often bully those who do not have mobile
phones. After verbal bullying over the phone, children can get involved in verbal and even
physical fights, which can be dangerous.

5) Privacy & Security Concern

Mobile phone is an integral part of daily life routine. People use mobile phones to store their
personal and financial data including debit/credit card details, net banking credentials,
addresses, mobile numbers, etc. Breaching into the phone can make all such details accessible
to hackers, resulting in loss of money, personal data, and even reputation.

Apart from this, people, these days use mobile phones for secretly taking pictures, and
recording audio or video of others. Such an image or video can be misused in various ways.
The most common examples include using images to create fake pornographic material and
then blackmailing the corresponding individuals. In addition, people can use the images to
create fake identities on social media to spread rumors. Thus, mobile phones have a major
drawback for security and privacy.

6) Life Threats
Mobile phones can sometimes be life-threatening, which means they can put one's life in
danger. There have been many such cases where people lost their lives due to mobile phones.
The most common scenario that we can often see is people using mobile phones while driving,
or crossing the road, which causes accidents in most of the cases. In this way, people using
their phones not only put their lives at risk but also put the lives of others at risk.

Apart from road accidents, over time some other specific cases have been registered where
mobiles have proved to be life-threatening. Cases have been registered in which it was claimed
that mobile batteries exploded and people were harmed. Apart from this, there have also been
mobile applications like Blue Whale, Momo, etc., due to which youth and children committed
suicide or killed others. Moreover, mobile theft is very common in many cities, causing fighting
and life-threatening.
7) Bad Environmental Impact
Researches in the past have shown that mobile phones have become the most harmful of all
electronic devices, causing huge emissions into the environment. Most of the emissions impact
comes from the production chain, which is increasing day by day. On average, manufacturing a
new mobile phone uses almost the same amount of energy as it consumes while using it every
day (including charging) for 10 years. Thus, its production is more harmful than using it in daily
life.

Mobile phones require various elements, including metals that are usually obtained through
mining processes. The process of mining, refining, manufacturing, and transportation around
the world typically involves massive amounts of harmful emissions, releasing more carbon into
the air. With the increasing number of mobile phones around the world, the overall
environmental impact of mobile phones has also increased significantly. Mobile phones,
especially smartphones, produce more greenhouse gases than any other electronic device or
component

Although there are many disadvantages to using mobile phones, they are widely used all over
the world. It is our responsibility to avoid unnecessary use of mobile phones and try not to
change our mobile phones frequently. It is up to the users to mitigate the effects of mobile
phone damage to some extent. Apart from those discussed above, mobile phones have many
other advantages and disadvantages.
