(D:). If the drive letter isn’t ‘D’ that is ok. Highlight it and click Make New Folder. Create a new
folder called Server1, click the folder to save the VM in the new folder. Click next.
5. Set the maximum disk size to 40 GB.
Select ‘Store virtual disk as a single file’. Click next.
6. BEFORE clicking finish. Click ‘Customize Hardware’.
Highlight Memory and set it to 4096MB.
Highlight Processors and change settings to 1 Processor with 4 Cores.
Click close.
Click Finish.
Note: If you stopped and restarted the lab at this point you will have to open VMWare Workstation Pro
again but you will notice you will not see your VM. You have to load your VM into VMWare
Workstation Pro first, by selecting “Open a Virtual Machine”, and navigating to where you stored your
VM on your SSD.
1. You will see a black screen with Loading Files……. as the system reads from your ISO. When the
Windows Setup window appears, select English as your language, and set the Time, Currency and
Keyboard settings to English US. Click NEXT.
2. On the next window, select Install Now button to start the installation. Since we are using an
evaluation copy of Windows Server, we will not be asked to enter a Product Key.
3. You will need to select the operating system you want to install. Select Windows Server 2012 R2
Datacenter (Server with a GUI) and click NEXT.
4. Read the License terms and click the box for I accept the license terms, and click NEXT.
5. In the next window, select Custom:Install Windows Only (advanced) for the type of installation you
want to perform.

7. You should only see 40GB of Unallocated Space on your hard drive, highlight it and then click Next.
8. The installation program begins installing Windows Server. You will see progress information about
copying files, expanding files, etc. The installation program will restart the VM and then you can
continue.
9. You will have to set the Administrator password before the operating system will complete the
booting process.
10. Enter a new password for the Administrator account. Use the password P@ssw0rd and type it again
in the Confirm Password field. Click Finish.

11. You will see a grey screen saying Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to sign in, plus the date and time. Click on
the VM Screen anywhere and then press Ctrl+Alt+Insert (Ctrl+Alt+Delete will be sent to the PC and
VM which we don’t want to happen. This is why we use Insert, it sends the Ctrl+Alt+Delete signal to
only the VM). Alternatively, there is a Ctrl+Alt+Del button on the top menu of VMWare Workstation
(looks like 3 keys).
12. Enter a password of P@ssw0rd to login.
13. Windows will boot and you will see the Server Manager Dashboard. On the right side of the screen,
you will see Networks. We do not want to find other devices on the network, so click No.
1. The Dashboard should be highlighted in the left sidebar of Server Manager.. Click Configure this
Local Server.
2. Beside Computer Name, you should see the default name configured by the installation process:
WIN-xxxxxxxxxx.
3. Click the current computer name and the System Properties dialog box will appear.
4. Click Change… Type your new computer name (from the chart in the PreLab). Your computer name
should be your SenecaID-S1. If your name is longer than 16 characters, remove some letters.
5. Leave your computer in the workgroup called WORKGROUP. Your computer will require a restart in
order for the changes to take affect. Click OK. Close System Properties. Click Restart Later.
6. Back in the Properties area of the Server Manager – Local server, find the timezone and change your
timezone to Eastern (Canada and US). You may have to use the scrollbar to scroll right to see the time
zone. Now restart the server for the changes to take affect.
7. To restart the server, click the start button in the bottom left hand corner. Now in the top right corner
you should see a power icon. Click it and choose ‘Restart’.
8. After the computer has restarted, login, and click Configure this Local Server and verify your
computer name has been changed.
Temporarily, we will turn the Windows Firewall OFF. This is not recommended for a server, but we will
be turning it off in order to more easily download some software. We will then turn it back on.
1. In the Server Manager, make sure you are still in the Local Server properties window, find Windows
Firewall.
2. Click Public: On, then select Turn Windows Firewall On or Off from the menu on the left. Turn all
settings OFF. Click OK and close the Windows Firewall window.
1. Open Internet Explorer. Notice that in the IE window there is information about IE Enhanced
Security Configuration. Browse through this information. This feature of IE on a Server will make it
very difficult for us to use the Internet. We will have to add every site we want to access to a list of
Trusted Sites. Because of this we need to change some security settings to make it easier for us to get
on the Internet.
2. To disable the enhanced security configuration, open Server Manager-Local Server, then find IE
Enhanced Security Configuration (you may have to scroll right). Click On. and then turn it OFF for

both Administrators and Users. Download and install FireFox and/or Chrome onto your computer
so that you don’t have to use Internet Explorer for future web access or downloads.
1. Use the instructions from where you turned your firewall off to turn your Firewall back on again.
1. Use the Server Manager to view information about your computer’s hardware configuration:
Processor:
Installed Memory (RAM):
Total Disk Space (Windows Partition) :
2. Verify that the information you see is what you expect, based on how you configured your Server1
Virtual Machine.
2.0 Create Another Virtual Machine and Install Windows Server Again
Use the instructions from Section 1.0 up to, and including section 1.3.1.
1. Create another VM, exactly the same as the first, except name it Server2.
2. Install Windows Server into this new VM exactly the same way.
3. Change the computer name (SenecaID-S2), but do not continue. You do not need to do the Firewall
and installing of a new browser.
1. Using the instructions and settings from above, create a second VM with the following specifications:
VM name: Client1
Hard drive size: 20GB
Memory: 2048 MB
*the Guest Operating System is Windows 8.x x64
Save the Client1 VM files into a NEW folder, called Client1 on your SSD.
2. Use the Windows 8.1 Evaluation ISO file that was downloaded onto your SSD in Section 1.0.
Connect the ISO file to the VM (as in previous instructions).
3. Start the VM and install Windows 8.1, following the on-screen instructions. It is very similar to
installing Windows Server.
4. Change the computer name to SenecaID-C1. Personalize your installation if you wish. Use Express
Settings for your setup.
5. When prompted, DO NOT make a Microsoft Account. Select create a new account, and then at the
bottom of the screen there should be Sign in without a Microsoft account. Create a Local user
account with your SenecaID as the user name and and use the default password of P@ssw0rd. (You
do not have to link a Microsoft account to this installation of Windows. Just create a regular user
account.)

6. If you need extra help installing Windows 8.1, you might find the following link helpful: How to
install Windows 8.1 (http://www.techverse.net/how-to-install-windows-8-1/)
7. Once the installation is complete, no further configuration is required. We will use this client VM in
other labs.
To prove you have completed the lab, you must demonstrate the following to the instructor or lab
assistant:
Show your Server1 VM with the installation of Windows Server 2012 on it.
Open Server Manager-Local Server and show your changed Computer Name
Show your Server2 VM with the installation of Windows Server 2012 on it.
Open Server Manager-Local Server and show your changed Computer Name
Show your Client1 VM with the installation of Windows 8.1 on it.
Make sure you get each lab checked immediately after it has been completed. After you have
demonstrated your lab, your lab will be marked completed, and marks will be entered on
Blackboard.
