phases of war. Normally this weapon is under the CO during wartime as well as during training.
CHARACTERISTICS OF 82 MM MORTAR(MOR)
2. The characteristics of this weapon are divided into three main categories: -
a. Physical characteristics.
b. Fire power
c. Tactical employment.
(a) Weight
(i). Barrel - 36 lbs
(ii). Bipod - 41 lbs
(iii). Base plate - 33 lbs
(iv). Sight Unit - 21 lbs
(b) Traverse
82 mm Mor is capable of traversing through a total of 150 mills,
75 mills left and 75 mills right from the centre.
(c) Elevation
The barrel of 82 mm Mor can be elevated from 350 mills to 958
mills.
(c) Flexibility
82 mm Mortar can give fire support while being traversed through
6000 mills at the range of 3040m without changing base plate posn.
(d) Visibility
82mm Mor can be used to give fire Sp in all weather condition,
rainy, sunny day or night provided precautionary measures are
observed
(f) Fragmentation
On explosion the fragmentation of 82mm bomb kills within the
radius of 20m and inflict injuries up to a radius of 100m.
(h) Limitations
(i) Beaten - zone. The area beaten by the bomb of 82 mm Mor
characterised by an elliptical shape, being long and narrow.
(ii) Accuracy: The accuracy depends on the aiming, weather
changes and the difference in amount of charges.
(b) Mobility
The crew of 82 mm can mount and dismount quickly and deploy
the wpn in a very short time. Where vehicles cannot carry them
the crew can dismantle and carry wpn.
(c) Vulnerability
Crew shouting, explosion, smoke and vehicles cause this
weapon vulnerable to the enemy so it’s advised to shift the posn
of mortar after every short while.
SECTION – 2
(1) While mounted in vehs a sec of Mor will adv following the Infantry
Coy and will dismount and deploy quickly ready to Sp the Coy when
required to do so.
(2) While the Infantry Coy is advancing, the 82 mm Sec Mor will be
deployed to Sp it up to its maximum range where the Infantry Coy will
halt and the Mor sec will move fwd to the posn of the Infantry Coy.
This method is time consuming so it is more advisable to adopt the
first method.
b. Attack
During attack a Mor Sec in sp of Infantry Coy will be deployed to provide
fire sp up to 2000m beyond en posn so that it can give its fire power up to the
time reorganization and exploitation without changing its posn in delivering
the following types of fire.
c. Defence
In defence a Mor Sec will be deployed to sp the coy during day and night.
Means of communication is by field telephone and radio.
(1) Routine harassing fire should continue as scheduled from reserves mor posn.
(2) Mortar posn should be dug in and properly camouflaged and track
discipline observed.
(3) Mortar should be aimed at DF SOS.
(4) Veh containing bomb and other store should be well camouflaged at
the park line.
(5) A continuous listening and watch on the radio and field telephone
should be maintained 24 hrs.
d. Withdraw
Deployment in new defensive area is the same as in old defensive area.
The sec comd (Cpl) is a member of the rear recce party to choose where to deploy his
wpns. MFC will be informed of a chosen position for deployment.
SECTION –3
