The principle of operation and characteristics of various
electronic devices and their applications in electronic circuits.
Semiconductor Devices
Semiconductor Diode Introduction, Semiconductors, Energy Levels, n-type and p-type
materials, Semiconductor Diode, Characteristics of Diode, Diode Equivalent Circuits.
Transitions, Recovery, Specification, Notations, Testing of Diode, Zener Diode, Light
Emitting Diodes, Numerical Problems.

Diode Applications
Introduction, Load Line Analysis, Parallel and Series Configurations, Gates, Sinusoidal,
Half Wave/Full Wave Rectifiers, Clipper and Clamper Circuits, Zener Diodes, Voltage-
Multiplier Circuits and Applications, Numerical Problems.

Bipolar Junction Transistors


Bipolar Junction Transistors Introduction, Bipolar Junction Transistors’ Construction and
Operation, and Amplification analysis, Common-Emitter, Common-Base and Common
Collector Configurations of BJT, Limits of Operation, Specification, Testing, Casing and
Terminal Identification of BJTs, Numerical Problems.

Course Outline: What you will learn here
Transistor Amplifier analysis:
BJT DC Biasing techniques, Q-point operation, Transistor as an amplifier, hybrid
model of a transistor, small-signal analysis, large-signal analysis, gain calculation
of single-stage amplifier, cascading, multistage gain calculations.
Current sources:
simple current mirror, Improved Current Mirror, Widler and Wilson current
source.
Differential Amplifiers:
DC and AC analysis of differential amplifier, Design of simple Op-Amp, Level
translator, Output stage design.
Power Amplifiers:
Class A amplifier, class B amplifier (push-pull and complementary symmetry
configuration), class AB amplifier, class C amplifier.

Operational-Amplifier:
Use of op-amp as a circuit element, op-amp with negative feedback,
frequency response of an op-amp, DC and AC analysis of op-amp ICs.
Practical amplifier considerations:
Input and output impedance, offset and offset compensation, amplifier
loading, impedance matching.
Feedback:
Feedback concept, feedback amplifiers, voltage feedback amplifier,
current feedback amplifier. Effect of feedback on frequency response.
