Group Case Study Report (15%)

1. Assignment:

Each group (4~5 students) has to write a case study report.

2. Focus Section:

The report should focus on ONE (1) specific area of OB that we study in this class, which is
Motivation at Work.

Students are required to choose an organization, determine their organizational structure and
culture. Next, students shall report how the two elements motivate their employees’ work performance.

Apply your knowledge of these topics to analyse critically TWO specific work performance that
are motivated from the organisational structure and culture.

Wrap up your critical analysis/thoughts/ideas/reflections about the case study in your final
paragraph. Make sure to discuss what you have learned from the case study in your conclusion.

What does analyse critically mean?

Critically in this context means the efforts in evaluating somebody's work (a book, an essay, a case...) in
order to increase the reader's understanding of it. A critical analysis is subjective writing because it
expresses the writer's opinion or evaluation of a text. Analysis means to break down and study the parts.
Writing a critical paper requires two steps: critical reading and critical writing.

3. Assignment Guidelines:

Your paper should be a maximum of 2000 word and strictly follows APA format. Wordy reports and
unnecessary messages are not allowed, so you need to practice writing concisely, without wasting
words.

It is required that your critical analysis be presented in essay format with a clear introduction,
body and conclusion (refer to Report Format Sample). Also, information from the case study is expected
to organise into a format that flows logically and communicates the major areas covered in your report.

Please refer to the Assignment check list for detail formats.

Critical Analysis and Reflections: The Huawei case study emphasizes the interrelationship of
organizational structure, culture, and employee motivation. The matrix structure encourages
collaboration and innovation, while the culture encourages personal and professional development. The
company's emphasis on long-term collaboration and commitment is consistent with its competitive
strategy. However, several criticisms of Huawei's intensive work culture, as well as potential ethical
difficulties, have arisen in the media, raising doubts about the long-term viability of such a strategy.
Finally, Huawei's organizational structure and culture are critical in motivating employees' work
performance. The matrix structure promotes collaboration and innovation, while the culture supports
lifelong learning and career advancement. The examination of product development and personnel
retention illustrates how these components influence work performance favorably. The case study,
however, compels us to evaluate the potential problems and ethical consequences of the company's
strategy. Overall, studying Huawei's story teaches us a lot about the complex interplay between
organizational behavior, motivation, and company achievement.
