Column Problems:
Question 1:
Figure 1 shows the cross-section of a reinforced concrete column which for architectural
reasons has the shape of an isosceles triangle and has a total of eight N24 reinforcing bars.
Material Properties are f ’c = 32 MPa and fsy = 500 MPa.
(a) Calculate the depth of the plastic centroid dpc for the section about a horizontal axis.
(b) This column section is subjected to combine axial compression and bending about a
horizontal axis. Calculate the Mu , Nu values corresponding to a neutral axis depth of 250 mm.
Assume that the Equivalent Rectangular Stress Block (ERSB) parameters used for rectangular
sections also apply to this section.

Question 2:
A reinforced concrete column, with an asymmetric arrangement of longitudinal reinforcement,
is proposed as an interior braced column in a multi-storey office building. The column is braced
at top and base by beams and has a clear unsupported length, Lu = 12.0 m. The details of the
column section and the results of a first order elastic analysis are shown in Figure 2.
Only in-plane bending about the strong axis is to be considered. The reinforcement is N-bars
and the concrete characteristic strength is f’c = 32 MP.
(a) Please determine the plastic centroid, dpc. Calculate from first principles the value of the
design pure axial compression capacity, ΦNuo (in kN, please).
(b) Calculate from first principles (ERSB) the design capacities at the "balanced" condition,
ΦMub (in kNm, please) and ΦNub (in kN, please), considered about the strong axis. Use dn =
kuo d0.
(c) Determine design pure moment capacity, ΦMuo, using ERSB. Assume that, first, all the
reinforcement has yielded - As1 is in compression and As2 and As3 are in tension. As part of
this calculation, you will need to calculate the effective depth, d (in mm, please).

Question 3:
A cross-section of a reinforced concrete column with 12N36 bars is shown in Figure 3.
Material Properties are f’c = 32 MPa and fsy = 500 MPa
(1) Considering bending about the xx (horizontal) axis, please determine ΦNu and ΦMu when
dn = 250 mm (from top). (7 marks)
(2) Figure 4 shows the interaction diagram for the reinforced concrete column. The service
loads applied at an eccentricity of 200 mm on the column along x axis are permanent action of
NG = 1500 kN, imposed action of NQ= 600 kN. Is this proposed column cross-section adequate
to carry the design action N* and M*? (2 marks)
(3)When the axial compressive load on a section increases, the section's ability to carry moment
also increases in region AB, please explain why? (1 mark)

Question 4:
This task is to design the short tied and braced reinforced concrete column (Type A) shown in
Figure 5 at Ultimate Limit State according to AS3600:2018. The cross-section is square shaped
(D = b). Reinforcement is composed of normal class steel bars (Es = 200000 MPa; fsy = 500
MPa). The characteristic compressive strength of concrete is 40 MPa. The exposure condition
of the column is A2. The dead and live imposed loads are
MG = 50 kNm NG = 300 kN
MQ = 20 kNm NQ = 150 kN
The self-weight of the column will be neglected (assumed equal to zero).

Question 1: Determine the column cross-section depth D, assuming Nu/Ag = 10 MPa (2 mark).
Question 2: Using the design chart for g = 0.8, determine the percentage of longitudinal steel
reinforcement required for this column, the area of longitudinal steel reinforcement, and select
the appropriate rebars (3 marks).
Question 3: Check the value of g and revise the design accordingly (2 marks).
Question 4: Select appropriate ties bar diameter and spacing, carry out the final design check
and draw the column cross-section (3 mark).
