SEAA4243 - FEM ASSIGNMENT 02 SEM 20222023-1

1. The beam structure shown in Figure 1 is subjected to a concentrated force of 8 kN and

uniform distributed load of 12.5 kN/m. The beam is made of timber with 𝐸𝐸 = 20 kN/mm2.
By using two beam elements, determine:

i) Deflection and rotations at nodes 2 and 3,

ii) Reaction forces at the supports and bending moment at node 2.
(Take 𝐼𝐼 = 2.1 x 107 mm4)

2. A simply supported beam is subjected to a quadratic distributed load, 𝑞𝑞(𝑥𝑥) as shown in

Figure 2. Assuming that the beam is analysed using 1 beam element.

a) Determine the numerical values for the equivalent nodal load vector, 𝐑𝐑 where the
general formulation is given as:
𝐿𝐿
𝐑𝐑 =  𝑁𝑁𝑖𝑖 𝑞𝑞(𝑥𝑥 )𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
0

with the shape functions are given as:

3𝑥𝑥 2 2𝑥𝑥 3 2𝑥𝑥 2 𝑥𝑥 3

𝑁𝑁1 = 1 − + 3 ; 𝑁𝑁2 = 𝑥𝑥 − + 2 ;
𝐿𝐿2 𝐿𝐿 𝐿𝐿 𝐿𝐿

3𝑥𝑥 2 2𝑥𝑥 3 𝑥𝑥 2 𝑥𝑥 3
𝑁𝑁3 = − 3 ; 𝑁𝑁4 = − + 2 ;
𝐿𝐿2 𝐿𝐿 𝐿𝐿 𝐿𝐿

b) By taking the value of the flexural stiffness of the beam, 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 = 5 kNm2 and its length,
𝐿𝐿 = 10 m, determine the numerical values of the degree of freedom vector, 𝐃𝐃 where 𝐊𝐊𝐊𝐊 =
𝐑𝐑.

c) If the beam is subjected to an additional applied moment at point 2, 𝑀𝑀2 = −10 kNm,
determine the new values of the degree of freedom vector, 𝐃𝐃 where 𝐊𝐊𝐊𝐊 = 𝐑𝐑 𝐧𝐧𝐧𝐧𝐰𝐰 . Note
that, 𝐑𝐑 𝐧𝐧𝐧𝐧𝐧𝐧 is now the total effect of distributed loads, 𝐑𝐑 and point loads, 𝐁𝐁 so that 𝐑𝐑 𝐧𝐧𝐧𝐧𝐧𝐧 =
𝐑𝐑 + 𝐁𝐁.

3. Figure 3 demonstrates a simply supported truss structure subjected to several point loads at Node A and
Node D.

a) Redraw the truss system and provide an appropriate degree-of-freedoms at every node.

b) Based on the given value of point loads, determine the nodal forces vector, 𝐑𝐑 for the system.

c) After assembling all the local stiffness matrices ( 𝐤𝐤1 , 𝐤𝐤 2 , 𝐤𝐤 3 , 𝐤𝐤 4 , 𝐤𝐤 5 , 𝐤𝐤 6 and 𝐤𝐤 7 ) into the global matrix
(𝐊𝐊), the matrix element 𝐤𝐤 322 of element 3, for example, is located at row 4 and column 4 in the global matrix.

Determine the location (in terms of row and column) for all matrix elements below:
2
iii) 𝐤𝐤11 of element 2
iv) 𝐤𝐤 424 of element 4
v) 𝐤𝐤 743 of element 7

4. Figure 4 shows a truss structure being pin jointed at joint A and supported by a roller at joint B. A 25 kN
horizontal joint load acts at joint C. The element number and global degree of freedom numbering are shown
in the figure. The axial stiffness for all truss members are given as constant i.e. 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 = constant. Determine:

vi) Displacement at joint C.

vii) Internal force in element 2 and 3.
