Request for Applications
The Association of Schools of Public Health (www.ASPH.org), which represents the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)-accredited schools of public health, promotes the efforts of schools of public health to improve the health of every person through education, research and policy. Based upon the belief that "you are only as healthy as the world you live in," ASPH works with the government and other professional organizations to develop solutions to the most pressing health concerns and provides access to the ongoing initiatives of the schools of public health. The ASPH Public Health Policy Fellowship Program provides a comprehensive one-year traineeship in public health policy. ASPH Fellows experience and participate in the policy process of Congress or the Executive Branch in Washington, DC. The Program includes an in-depth orientation to the legislative process and other professional development opportunities throughout the year.
1. Eligibility
Students receiving their MPH or Doctorate degree prior to the beginning of the fellowship (no later than August 2012) and early career professionals with MPH or Doctorate degrees (within five years of graduation) may apply for the fellowship program. Applicants must be students/graduates of an ASPH-member graduate school of public health accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. (A full list of accredited ASPH-member schools can be accessed via the ASPH website at www.asph.org). Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or hold a visa permitting permanent residence in the U.S. (i.e., have a U.S. green card) to be eligible for the fellowship program. 2. Period of Performance
Fellowship positions are full-time opportunities for the duration of 12 months (approx. September 1, 2012 - August 31, 2013.)

3. Location
The ASPH Public Health Policy Fellow(s) will be placed in a congressional or committee office, or an executive branch agency, to be determined, in Washington, DC. Selected fellows are required to relocate to the fellowship location. A relocation allowance of $1,000 will be offered to selected applicants who currently live outside the Washington metropolitan area.
4. Fellowship Opportunities Available
ASPH will place up to two (2) Public Health Policy Fellows in 2012, based on the availability of funding.
5. Funds Available
The stipend level for the one year fellowship position is $45,000 - $50,000, based on level of education. In addition to the fellowship stipend, the fellow(s) will have access to a $5,000 fellowship allowance intended to cover health/dental/vision insurance premiums during the one year fellowship period, as well as pre-approved fellowship-related travel . The fellowship stipend is intended to cover all living expenses including housing and project related travel. Fellow(s) will also receive a $1,000 moving allowance for the move to and from the fellowship site. Fellows are required to secure their own housing and health insurance while in the fellowship program.
6. Expected Benefits
This Fellowship will provide a unique opportunity for a motivated and experienced individual to play a role in helping to shape United States health policy. Specific anticipated benefits include: Development of a thorough understanding of the public health policy and the legislative process; Access and networking with experienced policymakers, public health professionals, and experts in the field of public health; and, Obtain hands-on real world health policy experience in the fast-paced environment of Capital Hill or the executive branch.
7. Required and/or Desired Skills and Knowledge
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Ability to work independently on a variety of projects. Demonstrated interest in the field of public health policy. Interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Individual plans on incorporating the fellowship experience into specific career goals. Experience working on various Health Policy Issues at the State, local and/or National level.
8. Application Procedure
Applications are to be completed online through the ASPH Fellowship Online Application System at http://fellowships.asph.org/apply/index.cfm. All supporting, hardcopy materials must be sent via traceable delivery service to the ASPH office in Washington, DC. The materials needed to complete an application are detailed on the application form. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please see Section 13 for detailed application instructions. 9. Evaluation Criteria

Review Committee
In February and March, 2012, a review committee will complete the objective review of the applications based on the criteria described above. Applicants may be contacted by the committee for additional information and/or clarification of information relevant to the application. Upon completion of the objective review, final candidates will be required to come to Washington, DC for a face-to-face interview with the final selection review committee. (Travel expenses for the interviews will be reimbursed to the applicant by ASPH.)

11.
Final Selection
The final selection review committee will interview the finalists in late-April, 2012. In order to be considered for final placement, all finalists must attend this interview. Upon accepting the invitation to attend the final selection interview, finalists must be prepared to accept a fellowship offer, if given. The selected applicant will be notified by telephone on or before May 4, 2012.

The ASPH Fellowships Online Application System is the centralized application service for applicants from an ASPH member-accredited school of public health. ASPH offers this Webbased application to make the application process easy and convenient. You may begin your search and application immediately by clicking the link below:

The system is a secure website. To begin an online application, please register by clicking the "Register Now" button on the right side of the application page. Registration is free and easy. A password will need to be created to protect and save the account for future access. All information is transmitted through a secured server and is kept confidential until the application is submitted. An application is only reviewed by staff after it has been submitted. Upon submitting the online application, all hardcopy forms will need to be mailed to the ASPH office. No application will be processed until both online and hardcopy forms are received by ASPH. Please read carefully the instructions that appear throughout the online application system. Applicants may edit applications following submission by clicking on withdraw at any time prior to the application deadline. If this is done, applicants must then resubmit the applications in order to be received and reviewed by ASPH. The application profile may be edited as necessary at any time prior to the application due-date.

Two Generic Letters of Recommendation (from the references provided in the online application)
Must be on a letter head with contact information and original signature. Does not need to be in a sealed envelope. Please request for your recommenders to not fold or staple recommendation letters.
A copy of your Green card, if you are not a US Citizen. Please do not staple any hard-copy documents in the application packet. All hard-copy documents must be received by ASPH no later than 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 23, 2012. An application will not be considered complete, and therefore will not be reviewed, if all hard copy documents have not been received by ASPH by this deadline. Documents received after this deadline will render your application as ineligible for consideration for the program. All hard-copy documents must be sent to ASPH in ONE PACKAGE.
