Lesson Plan: Career Opportunities in Hospitality and Tourism

Grade Level: High School / College


Subject: Career Exploration / Hospitality and Tourism
Duration: 60-90 minutes
Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Identify various career opportunities in the hospitality and tourism industry.


2. Understand the required skills, qualifications, and career pathways for different roles.
3. Discuss the impact of tourism and hospitality on local economies and global trends.
4. Evaluate personal interests and aptitudes to guide potential career choices in these fields.

Materials:

 Whiteboard/Smartboard and markers


 Projector/Computer for multimedia presentation
 Handouts or digital resources (job descriptions, industry statistics, etc.)
 Career path worksheets
 Guest speaker (optional)

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Warm-Up Discussion
o Ask the students: "When you think of hospitality and tourism, what careers come to mind?"
Write answers on the board.
o Discuss the broad scope of the industry, including careers related to lodging, food services,
travel, event planning, and more.
2. Lesson Overview
o Briefly explain what will be covered in the lesson: types of careers, required skills, and the
industry’s global impact.

Main Lesson (35-45 minutes)

1. Overview of Hospitality and Tourism Industry (10 minutes)

 Hospitality Sector: Hotels, resorts, cruise lines, restaurants, event planning, and entertainment.
 Tourism Sector: Travel agencies, airlines, tour operators, destination marketing organizations, and
local attractions.

Provide examples of large companies and organizations in both sectors. Show visuals (photos/videos) of
tourism and hospitality destinations to engage the class.

2. Career Opportunities in the Industry (15-20 minutes)

 Break down key career fields within the hospitality and tourism sectors:

a. Hotel & Lodging:

o Hotel Manager
o Concierge
o Front Desk Agent
o Housekeeping Supervisor
o Event Coordinator

b. Food & Beverage Services:

o Chef
o Restaurant Manager
o Bartender
o Catering Manager
c. Travel & Tourism:

o Travel Agent
o Tour Guide
o Airline Staff (Pilots, Flight Attendants)
o Destination Marketing Manager

d. Event Management & Convention Services:

o Wedding Planner
o Convention Planner
o Meeting Coordinator
 Use a slideshow to showcase each career, including job descriptions, typical duties, work environment,

 Discuss educational requirements for each position, including degrees, certifications, or on-the-job
training.

 Discuss the essential skills for working in the hospitality and tourism industries:

o Distribute worksheets that ask students to identify at least 3 careers in hospitality and tourism
that interest them.
o Students will research the qualifications and skills required for these careers and present their

o If possible, invite a guest speaker from the hospitality or tourism industry (hotel manager, tour
